I enjoy the manga still. It's clear that the characters still want the island safe, but cannot stomach the cost of genocide. They believe that it is their duty to stop genocide, and I have no doubt that as soon as they accomplish that they intend to protect the island from external threats to the best of their ability, including using the power of the titans and the explosive stone underneath the island, say to make antiaircraft machinery. I think that they're in the right to try to stop genocide and that their chance for survival afterwards is not nearly as bad as you imply. They are not stopping their island from being saved. They are stopping genocide and will find another way to save the island.

Because Isayama is an idiot and a hack. A good author will not slow down the climax of his own story. But we all know he is doing this because he sucks at drawing. Why do you think we didn't get to see Eren and Armin destroy the fleet that was used to scout Paradis? Because drawing a real war is too time consuming for him. It takes Isayama a whole day just to draw that fujobait cover when a real artist like Murata can draw and color that same cover in less than an hour while livestreaming and without any references.
