Does anyone else think that Kurapika is an overpowered Mary Sue?
Let's break down his abilities that he mastered within a few months of finding out about Nen: >he can detect if people are lying to him >he can detect missing people (Neon) on a map >he can enhance his punches hard enough to hurt Uvogin >he can heal himself >he can conjure chains and make them invisible >he can put a condition on you, so that when you lie to him, you will die >he can deflect bullets with his chains
At this point in time, Gon and Killua - who are said to be 1 in 10 million geniuses - haven't even developed a single ability yet.
Kurapika cheated and bought a fuckton of disadvantages to afford all his powers, and most of them become absolutely useless the moment the Spiders Arc ends as a result. The fact that he's basically the MC of the current arc and most of his powers don't work anymore because he already blew his plot-load is one of the major forces driving events, because he has to get creative.
Isaiah Phillips
what of his powers are useless besides the chain jail
Jackson Cox
>Does anyone else think that Kurapika is an overpowered Mary Sue? Some do but not me. Because a mary sue has to be infallably correct even when they should be wrong and Kurapika's biggest arc in York New was about how he kept making dumb decisions that got people killed and endangered his only friends all for revenge. And presently the guy has been wrecking himself and digging himself deeper and deeper into a hole he can't get out of all because of his pursuit of his clan's eyes.
>he can detect if people are lying to him Can be duped and requires seeing the person in some capacity >he can detect missing people (Neon) on a map it's somewhat vague how precise it is and not often used >he can enhance his punches hard enough to hurt Uvogin after he put Uvo in Zetsu >he can heal himself Nothing wrong with this, too many enhancers focus on punching hard and not self healing >he can conjure chains and make them invisible Anyone can make their hatsu invisible and their aura invisible in general >he can put a condition on you, so that when you lie to him, you will die An ability that only really works if he's already won since it's unlikely he'll be able to tag someone with judgement chain mid-fight. >he can deflect bullets with his chains Most capable nen users can just outright dodge bullets and even better, tank them. He has to deflect because he'd be ventilated without doing so.
He's got a strong kit don't get me wrong. But he's reliant on ambushes and careful setups. His best matchup is 1v1 against the PT and presently he can fight in a group against other nen users thanks to Steal chain but runs the risk of stealing an ability that is unfavorable given the current arc.
Jason Watson
All these for a really short lifespan. He's not gonna be a mary sue for long.
Leo Gutierrez
Yes, he’s ruined this series. The series is currently nothing but dialogue walls of text mixed with the Phantom menace alien senate. You can’t find ways of him using his overpowered nen without breaking established nen laws so you have to invent new powers and Togashi is out of ideals. Should’ve had Crapika as a secondary character and Gon and Killua as the main focus.
Jayden Thomas
I would think that if Kurapika smoothly asspulled through the plot, but there's only one main character who does that and he has white hair.
Dylan Reed
Being overpowered doesn't necessarily make a Mary Sue. Mary Sue is when a character is favored too much by the writer leading to unwarranted benefits like being loved by other characters for no reason or suffering no consequences for their actions.
Levi Campbell
Like Killua? That guy should be in jail
Josiah Collins
Kurapika will die of old age.
Bentley Peterson
Mine yellow bird name is Kurapika. Kurapika the bird.
Imagine making sure to craft a coherent and balanced power system in your manga, showing how even the most seemingly OP hatsus have big drawbacks, how conditions and vows can make you stronger but at the cost of limiting your scope and possibly losing your Nen for good, making all of that, and seeing some dumbass call one of your characters an overpowered Mary Sue because they're a speedreader
Robert Ross
Of course I'm aware that it isn't that easy. I know that Chrollo may have used a fake name and all that.
But if Chrollo is a floor master, he must be well known. He has to engage in fights every 90 days, and the public and Hisoka can watch those fights. That one guy, Kastro, knew who Killua and Gon were, saying "I keep tabs on all my rivals from the 200s"
Ryan Russell
I hate Killua so god damned much. Literally everything he has ever done is an asspull.
Nathan Brown
Explain yourself
Ayden Peterson
Kurapika isn't a nen master. He learned Nen less than 6 months prior to the York New arc, where he knew each of those abilities. I didn't include the extra abilities he knows in the current arc. Brainlet.
Jaxson Harris
o my wishes o my needle in my head
Dylan Scott
i hate killua too but needles isn't an asspull, also you're a retard
Tyler Robinson
Not only that, he's also a huge dick. It's because of him that Ponzu and Zepile never became hunters.
Juan Brooks
>have needle that mind controls you >just takes it out despite being a needle that MIND CONTROLS you
Yeah, much better than having Killua grow and face his abusive relationship with Illumi.
Wyatt Rivera
>illumi tells him to run away if he thinks he can't win >killua was thinking about running away which means he didn't think he could win, therefore, logically he is weaker >rips out needle >suddenly becomes super strong and rips off Rammots head in an instant
Jack Jones
Hisoka should have fought Chrollo somewhere else instead of Heaven’s Arena.
Jack Campbell
The wishes were not the best example of writing but the implications of Nanika completely breaking what we know about Nen and tying into Ai and the Dark Continent just an arc later is pretty sick. Even at his worst, Togashi manages to save some of the more bullshit plot lines. You do realise that the needle was planted there to make him fearful and run away when he encountered a battle he couldn't win, right? It wasn't designed to literally stop him from pulling it out.
Ryan Butler
The fight agains those darts fish was also an asspull Not even gonna talk about Alluka And all of his fights are the same >turns on assasin mode >arm becomes like that of a grandma >swooshes in and rips head off WOOOW SO COOOL
Evan Morris
Killua was always capable of taking Rammot out. He was distraught at the time, the needle was seriously fucking him up. He then pulled it out, his mind cleared, and he went to take out Rammot straight away. He did NOT become super strong. Is this bait? Are you intentionally misinterpreting the story?
Jonathan Myers
I'm scared of spiders but i'm stronger than them
Oliver Ross
If a spider is scaring you, you are not stronger
Blake Morris
You can be fearful of a creature and be physically stronger than it at the same time. Is this too hard to comprehend?
Jonathan Foster
the needle would make him run away if he wasn't sure could win. ie if he doubted himself
Kevin Ortiz
You are mixing up physical strength and willpower/life energy/Nen. You are right, my Nen would be very weak, but i'm still stronger physically. If you look at it from this perspective, that could actually explain why Killua was able to kill Rammot: removing the needle made his Nen stronger
