The beast is just a metaphor for his inner demons, mainly his rage and bloodlust. The ring would amplify those feelings overtime as Guts yielded himself to the ring's power more and more.
Now is a good time to get into Berserk, though, as we're getting our first new chapter of the year in 10 days. I caught up a couple weeks before the previous chapter, which was back in August.
