Read any shounen manga from before 2000. Or better yet, from before 1990. Naruto, Bleach and One Piece were what started the trend of braindead mainstream shounen manga. Not even Dragon Ball was that unambitious and intellecutally bankrupt.

No, I mean it. I'm not saying that Dragonball was outstanding or something. But compared to those three, it was a masterpiece. It was more creative (yes, just a creative Macguffin hunt, but creative nonetheless) and at times even fun, didn't take itself more seriously than it should have. Of course, the franchise made the same major error that One Piece made: Prolongation just for the sake of it.
