Renaissance was absolute shit for women.
During the Middle Ages, women were not considered the equals of men, but they were part of the workforce and actually participated a lot in society.
During Renaissance, they lost a lot of this freedom, and were almost exclusively considered an asset.
Women who were able to do stuff on their own, who owned their own land or wealth, or who had political power were often called heretics by the Catholic church, or/and witches by the people in general.
Witch hunting culminated in the Renaissance because of this.
If anything, the people in this show aren't insufferable enough with her. In reality, she would probably would have been dragged to the closest religious authority, or brought back by force to her mother.
