It's a pretty shitty genre since it focuses on the same tired old tropes and romantic cliches, but sometimes there's a gem to be found. Stuff like MADK and get thrown under the BL umbrella for having male/male couples but they don't fit at all when you compare them to the sea of formulaic shit that comprises most of the genre.

Throw in tired shit like alcohol as a facilitator, cute awkward sex, and "I was straight until I fell for you" and boom, you have a BL that is guaranteed to sell, neatly packaged for exactly 1 volume so no risk if it flops.
Stuff like Ten Ten Shiro Shiro, MADK, and I guess Kanna Kii's works before people started copying them are worth reading. There are a lot more varieties in boys nowadays as well. But the basic outline of the stories don't change much.
People are incorrectly slapping a "BL" label on it due to the final chapter, yes. There is a world of difference between BL and the rare manga that just so happens to have a bi/gay MC.

Like I said, this formula is old news now, espescially the sexuality crisis thing. Even the more laid back SoL types of stories are starting to spice things up recently.

Ao no Flag wouldn't have survived in Canna or any other BL magazine. It's not a story that focuses on boys loving boys, it just happened to end that way for the MC somehow or another.
Pretty much. Or they are the type of spergs who think MC must end up with his high school sweetheart or everything is RUINED because it's not pure love or something. I think those are the ones screeching the loudest about "author is a hack" and "just did it for the fujobux".

I'm just telling you that that's pretty much how you get to decide which manga is BL and which one isn't, it all goes down to magazine. Sure, there are a lot of conventions on the genre, but those conventions can get challenged every once in a while, specially these days. One Room Angel was one of the most best selling BL of 2019 and it didn't even have Romance in it.

- no self insert wish fulfillment protagonist, please
- the two romantic leads should have an interesting dynamic with each other and bounce off each other
- please make them both look good
