Kazuo Umezo's works are can easily compete with legends like King and Lovecraft, leaving Ito far off in the dust.
They are epic tales of cosmic horror, and do an excellent job at analysis the human condition with beautiful prose, and truly horrendously terrifying artwork.
I deeply implore everybody here to check out "Fourteen" or "The Drifting Classroom".

What I read of Drifting Classroom was actually hilarious. It's so over the top there's maybe 3 lines per volume that aren't "shouted" in spiky bubbles.
It is enough of a trip that I still recommend giving it a look, and I wish that more of the guy's stuff was easily available over here since he's apparently pretty influential.
