The character we had been following had essentially died when Judah-Luna blew up the part of his head where the regenerative core of his brain was. It was able to regenerate his body without being on fire, but he was basically reborn and lost all of his memories. 97% of his deceased former body got swallowed up by the tree, and the personality that was Agni essentially died and got to see Luna in the theater.
The new body without memories was given the name Sun and called his reincarnation and lived without ever knowing he was Agni/Fire Punch. After living for 80 years (he'd technically be 113 at this point) and becoming a teacher (spreading the education that Doma preached), he decided he no longer wished to live (someone once said that most regenerative Blessed kill themselves around age 100). His student gives him a suicide pill effective on regenerative Blessed and tells him that their land is about to become a toxic wasteland that only he would survive in, and he would only suffer if he chose to live.
Meanwhile, Judah-Luna continues to live, unaware of what life must be like back on Earth, all for the sake of Agni-Sun living a happy life. But hundreds of years pass, and living is a torturous experience from which Judah-Luna is unable to wake. She loses all sense of self and memories over countless millennia. Long after Earth is gone, she ends up coming across Agni-Sun. Even though he has lost his sense of self and memories as well, he had chosen to live through the same suffering. They introduce themselves as Sun and Luna, overjoyed at having each other in their lives after so long.
