The OP is a weird sort of overly peppy J-pop with an odd sound that is also pretty good. I wouldn't call it usual exactly.
I really need to watch this one again sometime.

Jojo OP 1 and two were pretty much flawless, but Roundabout is also that AND a classic that has withstood the test of time.

Seconded. Haruhi was the gateway anime for me. I was looking for something to fap to, thought it was hentai because it had cute girls, and was hooked by the plot, music and, well duh, cute girls. Haruhi is based as fuck.
