Why was 80/90s OVAs so much better than 99% of the trash on Yas Forums's front page?

Nostalgia goggles.
hunter hunter 99 > remake one
>AD Police
Funny joke OP. I almost responded as if you were serious.
change from analog to digital.
Because you're conveniently ignoring the hundreds of really bad 80s/90s OVAs.
AD Police sucked and Bubblegum Crisis was always one of the weaker Sonoda OVAs.
This. They only remember the good ones that managed to stand the test of time.
2D CEL Animation, having actual effort put into them, good time for the industry etc..
(You)
Why were 80s/90s OVAs so fucking bad?
Because 20 year old socially impaired otaku who didn't have a clue how to tell an interesting story were in charge of them.
Budget.
OVAs are largely expensive and short.
Money + nostalgia.
Remember when anime was good?
Does anyone have the old otaking shading then-now pics?
People overuse the term style over substance but most OVAs really are exactly that. The most popular 80s OVAs are especially bad since a lot of them have the neo-80s cyberpunk thing going for them which appeals to children and redditors. You could probably count the number of actually good OVAs from the 80s and 90s on one hand.
Because they were written stories that got animated, not cheap CG promotional material for feel-good light novels.
Better economy
>all that digital shit.
Seems like OP was right, those OVA will never be replicated.
>this thread again
It's amazing the worlds animators created to escape their living memories of the war and being nuked.
There is no such thing as bad 80s/90s OVA. Even the "bad" ones are fascinating to view. Instead, it will be you who will conventionally ignore this by actively seeking out the really awful ones, which make up only a handful of them.
>why were consumer-funded experimental often small-team dream projects better than large mass produced investor-funded industry
who the fuck knows
>Because 20 year old socially impaired otaku who didn't have a clue how to tell an interesting story were in charge of them.
lol, that's modern times. 80s and 90s OVA was basically a giant experimental time where a bunch of animators realize they could do whatever they wanted and had the budgets to go with it, without being restricted by TV limitations.
>consumer-funded experimental often small-team dream projects
Nice headcanon.
Even the "good" ones are generic cyberpunk schlock. There is very little of value to be found within the OVA format unless you watch anime with your dick in hand and your brain turned off.
Most of the OVAs that are considered great on Yas Forums are mediocre at best. There are very few OVAs that even reach the height of being adequate. They were made by people who wanted to be free of the constraints of TV anime but more often than not just ended up being schlock and/or animation showcases with no redeeming value outside of that.

>Original Animation Video & Original Video Animation (OAV / OVA) are interchangeable terms used in Japan to refer to animation that is released directly to the video market without first going through a theatrical release or television broadcast.
>OAVs are generally higher quality than TV series because a larger budget is allocated to the production and more time is allowed for the work.

>consumer-funded experimental

>80s Japanese animation
>OVAs of all things
You people. You don't even know what experimental animation is.
???
Because you don't actually watch a lot of 80s/90s OVAs.and engage with this hobby on a superficial level.
>at least half of these are stills that shake or are panned over
Wew
Yes.
>Digital effects
Looks good , but i'm pretty sure OP said Yas Forums's front page and i never see these on Yas Forums front page.
to answer OP's question , it's because Yas Forums is filled with filth otaku weeaboo , who don't like anime and just watch the hottest meme shows so they could laugh with firends about le funny anime is weird maymay
>I never see a popular movie from last year or fucking Hellsing on Yas Forums's front page
Are you re-
>that typing style
Oh, boy, it's the "anime is a joke" Yas Forums fag whose thread got deleted.
>webm looks better than most modern anime
what are you getting at ?
>>I never see a popular movie from last year or fucking Hellsing on Yas Forums's front page
You literally don't , 70% of Yas Forums front page is ecchi porn and waifu faggotry
You are retarded and have not been on Yas Forums for more than like two weeks. Also seventy percent of Yas Forums's front page is usually battle shounen.
Unfortunately, you can't even make good joke-comparisons out of Hinoue stuff because her designs look retarded even in well-animated bits.
>world wide theatrical release vs japan-only direct-to-video animation
op still right
animated in korea.
here are the top posts on Yas Forums right now, wow so much discussion , so much appreciation for the medium
He is right and i've been here 10 years. Most of time the board is shit.
>wow so much discussion , so much appreciation for the medium
Dunno where this came from, said nothing about that, but I repeat my points. Hellsing and Kaijuu no Kodomo have both had a ton of threads (roughly a trillion in Hellsing's case), and most of the front page is usually shounen. Actually, do we even have pages anymore?
>i've been here 10 years
>I've never seen Hellsing on the front page
Lies.
it's hyperbole you absolute dunce , of course there is the weekly Hellsing thread , but most of the time the front page is filled with le HHHa hottest meme of the season anime
Anime designed for an extremely niche audience with good taste, and deep wallets.
So by "I never see these things" you mean "I see them frequently even long after they ended, but people talk about recent anime more often than old ones"? Because I don't even see how that's a complaint.
>le HHHa
Is this a typo or some abbreviation I don't know?
I'll spell it out for you , OP's post was about how 80s OVAs look better than 99% of what's on Yas Forums front page which is true since 99% of Yas Forums front page is garbage.
the occasional good anime thread does not negate OP's point
>>OP's post was about how 80s OVAs look better
>look better
No, it wasn't. Reread the OP.
>Muh extreme violence and se ke su
Unwatchable garbage
>Yas Forums is so contrarian that prefers soulless modern shit compared to actual soulful stuff
Why is everyone throwing the muh you only remember the bad stuff argument? That's stupid as hell. Every era has his own bad batch of stuff that no one will care about, even today, so this argument is absolute bullshit.
The real problem is that no anime made in the last 5 years will be remembered at all while many 80s and 90s cult classics will still be discussed.
