Based speedreader. Tobi and Itachi did it together. Tobi has the cheatest power in existence and Itachi was an unparalelled genius who became an ANBU at 13 year old (he also had the mangekyo).
And even for that Itachi it was impossible to do it alone.You also had to take into account that Fugaku (itachi's father) also had the mangekyou but let his son kill him without resisting. Even the elders of Konoha feared the strength of the Uchiha.

My man didnt get the title, but he decided to protect the village in his own way. Including killing the 4th Kazekage before he declared war on the leaf. Basically everything Itachi did, Orochimaru did first and in a more impactful way to the story. Orochimaru was a true shadow Hokage too.

Orochimaru was simply testing Itachis strength here. To see if he was strong enough to continue watching the Akatsuki on his own.
Friendly reminder that Orochimaru canonically had Shin, an Uchiha clone who could produce unlimited Sharingan at his disposal. Orochimaru never truly needed the Sharingan.
The only reason he began lusting after Uchiha bodies, after he realised Kimmimaro of the KAGUYA clan was going to die, was because they are genetically related to the Ootsuki.
Orochimarus ultimate goal of learning all jutsu and immortality could only bring him to one conclusion. Become and Aye. And no surprise he ended up creating a clone of himself that has Aye DNA built in, Mitsuki.

The funniest thing would be if Orochimaru decides to go for the Rinnegan instead of the Sharingan and makes a plan on how to defeat Pain, but he didn't know that there were 6 bodies, but he still somehow manages to defeat all 6 while almost dying in the process, only to discover than non of them had a real Rinnegan and he never finds out that Nagato had the real one.

Kishi should have said that Itachi was driven insane from having participated in war at such a young age. It would have made his subsequent actions much more justified

I would suspect it is because the only Hyuuga strong enough to mentor and then take over is Neji, and he has a built in kill switch. Sasuke was the easier target especially because his revenge fantasy and desire for strength could be preyed upon.
There was a genuine point when Orochimaru met Sasuke that he was about to pass him up for being too weak. It was only seeing Narutos influence over Sasuke that Orochimaru believed the potential for growth was there and gave him the curse mark.

Hyuga have all kill switch, so hard to take a good Hyuga body.
Also, Rinnegan is one of the things he wanted, so after Itachi failure, he likely wanted to use Sasuke's body, gain MS, kill Itachi, gain EMS, implant Mokuton, gain Rinnegan. And be Dragon Sage somewhere along the way.

Well, Naruto is incredibly easy to trash, as some of the characters, especially the females as shallow, worthless, and genuine unlikable people.

Itachi was alright though. Could've bene worse.
