Learned mahjong days ago because of Akagi, it's a very fun game, but i can't understand one thing, Do i need a pair/triple of dragons/corresponding winds to get a ron or i can do it without them? I remember trying to call a tsumo some times, nothing happening on the game and i don't knowing why i couldn't not do it. I think i didn't get riichi right too, you can do it when you need only one piece to win right? There's no extra requirement?
>i couldn't not do it
Forget that extra not (and another dumb mistakes), my Engrish is kinda of rusty.
>Do i need a pair/triple of dragons/corresponding winds to get a ron or i can do it without them
That's just one possible "winning condition", aka "yaku".
You always need a yaku to win, whether it's ron or tsumo. Check pic related for a list of the main yaku.
The easiest yaku would be "closed tsumo" (aka drawing your own winning tile with a hand that's entirely closed : you haven't made any calls (pon, chi...) )
There's, like you said, having a triple of dragons or corresponding winds. This yaku is called "yakuhai".
There's also the main yaku of the game, "riichi". To get this yaku, you must get ready to win (you only need one piece to win) with a closed hand, and then (only then) you can say "riichi", throw 1000 points at the middle of the table and then you're in riichi. Everyone will know you're ready to win and will try to defend, but it's a super strong yaku.
Some yaku don't work with open hands. Some yaku work with open hands. And other yaku work with open hands but their value is decreased when open.
The next Yas Forums sings should be of Nantoka Nare.
if you only want to win and nothing more.
