I don't know why people get upset over this because they have always been portrayed this way consistently. They joined the Scouts because they wanted to help humanity, not themselves. That's why characters like Daz and Samuel joined the Garrison, because it was the safest option for them. When the core cast killed other humans, it wasn't because they wanted to. It's because it was their only solution. They have always been the kinds of characters to go for the least violent solution if possible.
I'm not against the ending of Eren genociding the world. If Armin, Connie, Jean, Mikasa, Hange, and everyone else are killed as a result of them holding out for a better solution, then that's fine. That's in character for them. They see global genocide as the worst possible outcome and that's an understandable position. Eren is also in an understandable position because he sees no other future where Eldians can live. Armin and co. are willing to dirty their hands, but not on the same scale as Eren. They were never in it for themselves, and that could be their downfall.
