Nothing else that season was any good. It took an entire year before we got our next anime masterpiece.

The manga is truly better and plus you don't have to deal with the filler towards the end of the first series. I will argue though the second series adds a lot when it comes to the animation. The first series had good animation for 1970 and also gave it a very dirty chalky look to it's movement which is innovative to see but the 1980 series gave us some awesome animated boxing matches which I feel enhances the manga. It's just like eating a brownie and then trying some fudge. It's a win/win.

Megalo Box is a pretty decent 13 episode Ashita no Joe inspired reboot if the original is too long. Second season is in development too.

I think I agree OP. Ashita no Joe was an incredible ride. My only real complaints are I feel Joe's first fight should have been much more decisive for Rikiishi and the contrast between 1 and 2. That contrast being the sound quality, the art, animation etc. as well as 1 having some filler as they were waiting for the manga to release.

Megalo Box is basically condensing most of AnJ into 13 episodes while trying its own thing. Its good but its only a homage, celebration of Joe. MB2 might fix things.

No not at all. It takes some of the basic ideas and then twists and turns them with a load of dogshit writing.
You're legit brain damaged if you can't tell the difference in quality and execution.

What Megalo Box has going for it is a suburban hiphop vibe and some nice background art. But it's so far removed from what made Joe good, that the mere comparison is insulting. It fucking ruined what made all the characters good, the only one who made the jump into being his own new thing and not just a shitty boiled down version of the original was not-Danpei.

Yes. Reach around the 55th episode of season 1 and then search for a guide on the watching order because I don't remember the episode it starts to devolve into filler.

Ashita no Joe can only be enjoyable if you're a stupid or wistfully nostalgic punk that enjoys the rawness of its storytelling and art direction. It doesn't have much to offer for patricians of outstandingly developed taste.
