Old Nagatoro was just really, really tryhard as a character, pretty much any other 774 character was more believable, Old Nagatoro is almost a parody at times.

New Nagatoro lost a lot of the archetypical bully character 774 went for in his old stuff and became just tsundere (with a lot of dere lately), and pretty cute too at times, I kind of prefer it personally, but mostly because again, old Naga was so exaggerated it was really hard to take her seriously.

Old one was best personality and I'd like to see her in the newer, better art style. She was a novelty in that she wasn't hurting him because she was deflecting her feelings of real affection, but that she derived real pleasure from hurting him physically and emotionally. It's even more uncommon when such a character is treated like just another cutesy high school girl with a personality quirk, which is because her cruelty was the desire of the fetish, and not negative behavior intended to be derided. There were a couple standout bits with old Nagatoro: when she had it painted all over face that she was experiencing an orgasm while beating her senpai to the point of unconsciousness; and when she almost drove him off entirely in a fit of maddening hysteria when she tricked him into believing she cucked him, but then winning senpai back over. New Nagatoro is just a tsundere with a silly face.
