I love Akio Watanabe's style, but I'm really concerned that it won't work in the context of Higurashi. Studio Deen's dumb looking faces really made the original show and I'm not sure if the updated designs will be able to translate that well.

I honestly prefer the DEEN designs. They were able to fit in the silly SoL bits and the more macabre scenes without being jarring. The Passione designs seem geared to light hearted moments but didn't seem convincing in the PV. I'm hoping to be wrong though.

It depends on the execution, I think. There's been a million different artstyles used on Higurashi's various adaptations over the years and they've always managed to pull off the horror scenes.
I doubt the people at Passione are thinking of making this the one version of Higurashi without any crazy faces.
