It took a combination of various things, seeing AM's true form, losing AM as a symbol, humiliation of obtaining his life goal through technicality, seeing the unrest him being number one brought civillians, the talk with all might along with watching his son playing gently with children while using both Rei and Enjis quirk, that's what opened his eyes. The fight with High End was just the nail in the hammer and in him burning it to death he figuratively burned away the man he used to be or could have became. Not hard to understand.
