I still am very disappointed with Urahara's bankai. I expected, well, something more for some reason.

The only bankai that I can say I was impressed by was Genryusai's.

What is this bullshit being spouted? All Shinji's Bankai does is reverse the alliances of everyone around him. Enemies become allies and allies become enemies via soulfuckery. He never uses it normally because it's absolutely useless in 1 v 1 matches and must be employed against a group of opponents while he has no allies with him. It's an OP but entirely situational Bankai. He even says his shikai is more convenient. Many captains would still beat his ass.

Quick dumb question. Does activation of a bankai merely just give characters an ability or does it give them a power boost along with it. Is shinji still able to take on captain level fighters because he can access his full physical might without his bankai or is he just that strong without it?

As Aizen proved during his fight with Suì-Fēng, strong enough reiatsu can resist any ability. I doubt it would work on the Sternritter

Yes. Groups of Stern Ritter like the Bambisluts and Elites would have gotten fucked if they chose to fight together. Against an army, there is no better captain than Shinji. Shunsui even said the gotei should be far away from him or they will ALL die. Kenpachi was with him among many espada and other captains.

Well his Shikai powers were intentionally left vague, his Bankai was more fitting to his actual personality.

Those are the only translations presently available to the public and it's reiterated so I doubt it's an error. There were lots of shitty fake spoilers about it, but in the end it's just reversing allegiances.

Yama's is lame when you consider Rukia can reach absolute zero. Why couldn't he reach absolute heat? A fucking lieutenant generating more thermal energy with their goddamn shikai makes his bankai seem incredibly underwhelming.
