When I first started watching anime over 12 years ago and got recommended TTGL, it was the biggest swell of emotions ever. Everything was over the top but gainax nailed every plot point and character without it burning out, every arch was better than the last and the finale was the most bittersweet but gripping ending in any anime save Code Geass.
Just recently rewatching and nothing for me has ever matched the level of absolute nirvana I experienced when watching this show. G gundam is close since the show is influenced from it, but nothing quite like it.
You're a funny guy. I don't have any recommendations also.
Adrian Powell
After the huge success of Promare, I'm hoping that Imaishi's next project will be an epic super robot movie trilogy. Maybe just wait six years for that.
Gavin Sanchez
DONT LOSE YOUR WAYYY!
Aiden Robinson
I wish Kill la Kill would get the Lagann-hen treatment.
Caleb Parker
In the mean time is promare worth watching? one of the MCs looks like they literally copy pasted Kamina's design
I heard the ending of kill la kill was awful, is it still worth watching?
Dylan Foster
kill la kill i actually think klk is a little better than ttgl but yeah its probably impossible for anything to replicate the magic of ttgl
Jose Bailey
TTGL is the essence of unrelenting human spirit purified to the maximum degree. Trying to top something like that is a risky game. No one really tried to do that since, not even Imaishi himself. OK, maybe Yuasa tries, but his stuff too different to compare. Take a look at Mind Game. Another show that I remember having a similar vibe from is, strangely, Tweeny Witches.
I don't know anyone that thinks Kill la Kill's ending is actually bad but I will say, when it aired, there were some people who were unreasonably pissed at something small that I won't spoil. Kill la Kill's ending is perfectly good but you may have seen people mad over one trivial thing.
Juan Cook
Just a note: I think many people got into KLK expecting another TTGL, but it's a different show. Like anything of high purity, TTGL is simple; KLK is somewhat more complex.
Lucas Hall
Have you tried watching Symphogear?
Isaiah Butler
KLK's ending is good. Its first few episodes are good too; the first 3 are strong and set up the story in a way similar to TTGL. Then it takes its time as it goes through a mixture of worldbuilding + silly episodes. But then it goes into a tournament arc for several episodes which really wasn't very important. The 2nd cour of the show gets even sillier (in the bad way, personally, where there is a lot of random action instead of a strong story. Is it worth watching? Probably, I don't think it's a total waste of time, just don't expect anything like TTGL. If you're fine with something silly and stimulating with the occasional heartful moment, KLK has that.
Promare though you should definitely watch as it's the closest thing to TTGL in terms of the feel. It's inspiring in a similar way. TTGL of course is a masterpiece and Promare isn't close to it, but I would say that on my first watch, around the halfway point there was a moment of awesome that made me feel "is this it? Did this just succeed in achieving a greatness close to TTGL?". In the final ~30% of the movie, the quality of the story dropped in usual Trigger fashion making way for more "fun" stuff. On first watch it bothered me quite a bit as the most of the movie was serious and engaging and well written enough, the final fourth felt like it was a different movie with a tone shift and all. I ended up watching it 4 times in theatres and the latter parts didn't bother me anymore once I knew what to expect, and found it more inspiring than my first watch when I was a bit disappointed.
Personally I'd say KLK is a 7.5/10, TTGL is basically a 10/10, Promare is a 8.5/10.
Oh yeah, don't worry about similar designs. Galo definitely harkens Kamina vibes, but they have some core differences in personality and he's unique, but similar enough to Kamina if you want more of that.
Caleb Gray
TTGL is probably more complex than KLK. At the very least, TTGL is much more effective when utilizing symbolism, and the show is probably 10x more engaging and entertaining. I understand the themes of KLK, but I think the execution and character development were lacking
If you’re a coomer, then you’ll like KLK, but stylistically, KLK is nowhere near TTGL. It really depends on what aspects made you like TTGL in the first place. On the off chance you haven’t seen FLCL, it’s very over the top and a great watch.
Dylan Wilson
cringe and plebfiltered
Ian Kelly
>No actual rebuttal KLK started strong, I’ll admit, but it fizzled out around the halfway mark. Best part of the show was the OST
Nathan Powell
>obsessed with a Getter Robo tribute show >doesn't even seem to know Getter Robo exists
Alexander Baker
As far as shonenshit goes it's up there but overall there's multiple shows that are better than TTGL It's 7 or 8/10
Aaron Lopez
KLK's ending is the best part about she show, anime fans just don't like it when a show that seems to not be taking itself seriously at first turns out to actually have stuff that requires them to have their brain on
Adrian Davis
like?
Isaac Richardson
Reminder that Nui survived. Mako’s backpack is made from her life fibers. Trigger-chan’s partner Spring will be retconned to be Nui in the inevitable Space Patrol Luluco 2.
Nathan James
KLK, FLCL, Steins;Gate, MiA, Parasyte, VEG, Girls' Last Tour, SSY, Haibane Renmei, Lain, Madoka, Haruhi, NGE, etc I mean of course those are different shows but they're better than TTGL
Connor Moore
Lagann-hen was garbage, but I guess that would be fitting for a garbage show like Kill la Kill.
Luis Watson
>Is there any show like Gurren lagann? GaoGaiGar and Symphogear
Cooper Rogers
Yes, Gaogaigar, Symphogear and motherfucking Getter Robo. Watch them right now.
Caleb Johnson
G gundam I guess
Nathaniel Johnson
> TTGL is much more effective when utilizing symbolism Due to its purity. It never loses the sight of its primary objective, which is why all its symbolism tends to add to the impression. KLK tries to expand on similar themes, but ends up been too contrived for its own good. In this case complex=/=good.
Joseph Rivera
>KLK better than TTGL kek
Parker Evans
Since you've already been rightfully called a faggot for not watching Getter Robo, I'm gonna tell you to go watch Shin Mazinger Z and the Giant Robo OVA.
Sebastian Thompson
I've heard people say the reverse, that it starts out slow but the second half is perfection. >If you're a coomer, then you'll like KLK is a horrible thing to say because people actually go into it with this mindset and end up turning their brain off and just going DUHH BOOBS if people actually pay attention and don't geniunely think its just a coomer ecchi then they'll realize why its compared with TTGL. now of course there are some coomers here that like it because theyre coomers and want satsuki to step on their balls but that's not why people like it and say its great
Oliver Lee
>to actually have stuff that requires them to have their brain on fucking this so many people don't like KLK cause they go into it with their brain off thinking its just coomer ecchi #385349 and then just miss everything thats going on. you also will fall in love with it more after watching it a second time which i think is also true for TTGL
Ryder Myers
I don’t think it’s just a coomer ecchi, and the themes are actually pretty relevant today, but it ultimately comes down to the enjoyment that I get out of watching it. This is obviously subjective, but regardless of how layered or deep a show is, the main goal is to craft an enjoyable piece of media. The plot wasn’t very interesting to me, and I didn’t resonate with any of the characters, except maybe the blind dude
Dominic Howard
>regardless of how layered or deep a show is, the main goal is to craft an enjoyable piece of media kek, no. There's nothing wrong with quality over fanservice, far from it even. People like you prevented Haruhi 2009 from saving anime.
Logan Hughes
> TTGL is like getter robo when will this meme die? the similarities are but superficial homage.
>Equating how deep something is to quality When I say it has to be enjoyable, I’m not talking about fanservice. I’m talking about character development, a compelling plot (not always necessary if themes are executed properly), and how the show makes the viewer feel. If we wanted a in depth philosophy lesson, we’d go major in Philosophy. The whole point of media is to relay those messages in an interesting way
Jeremiah Moore
>like means identical
Ethan Sanders
A show that aims at being enjoyable and nothing more is doing fan service in a literal sense. They give enjoyment to the fans.
David Turner
>Is there any show like Gurren lagann? There isn't and there probably never will be. TTGL walks the line between stupid and amazing like nothing else. You can find stuff that has a similar level of absurdity but it won't have the emotional impact. I mean how many shows have the balls to kill off a character like Kamina so early? Look at episode 8, it goes from "holy shit this is amazing" to sadness within minutes.
I don’t understand the point that you’re trying to make. Making an enjoyable piece of media and relaying relatable themes and deep messages aren’t mutually exclusive. >and nothing more Name one art form besides porn that is exclusively “fanservice.” Even children’s cartoons are used to set a moral foundation in youth
James Thomas
There are other super mechas but not on the same realm of what TTGL did. TTGL is more light hearted and positive where others are more serious and darker themes. Promare comes close though.
Adam Martin
pretty much this. no show will make you feel happy and full of adrenaline rush and then sad and depressed
Adrian Wright
Ping Pong the Animation
Carter Cox
I liked Kill la kill even more than gurren lagann and I love lagann
Liam Morgan
This is actually a great recommendation if you enjoy character driven stories and symbolism. I get that some people like TTGL mainly for the action and mood though
Eli Murphy
Imaishi shilled KLK as the second coming of TTGL in order to bring its audience and have TRIGGER gain a foothold as a studio. It is fair to compare them and criticize it, and KLK comes second in all aspects.
>how many shows have the balls to kill off a character like Kamina so early? Look at episode 8, it goes from "holy shit this is amazing" to sadness within minutes. >no show will make you feel happy and full of adrenaline rush and then sad and depressed Symphogear kind of did this in the climax of S1 when it pretended to kill off it's cast. This was before we even knew it was getting other seasons or before the S1 finale when it turns out they all lived, so the emotions felt genuine.
>You watch shows that make you feel hyped or emotional? What a fucking loser lol what? Are you autistic?
Ethan Martinez
Promare comes close only in terms of visual absurdity and characters that win just by confidence and believing. It's an amazing movie but in terms of hype it's not even close, the only real 2 hype scenes are the volcano and the very ending.
