I like Floch a lot, but I think he's just fine without backstory. The great thing about his character is that his important formative moments all happened in real time within the narrative. We can easily understand why he thinks and acts the way he does now just from the handful of scenes he's appeared in. Who he was before joining the SL doesn't really matter because he was just some guy. I wish more characters in SnK had that amount of on-panel character progression.

But I do want flashback of the formation of the Yeagerists and some of their activities during the timeskip. I don't have much hope since Isayama hasn't bothered to give the group much development outside Louise and Floch, but if there are any secrets he wants to use Floch to reveal, now is the time.

You don't understand. Since Armin is Isayama's self-insert, it's the author speaking through his character and so far both of these predictions (Yeagerists threatening the volunteers and Azumabito) have been confirmed.

If they took Floch, then they'd have the Yeagerists looking after them sooner to get him back/avenge his death. Jean pushing Floch away bought them time to regroup while Floch realized what happened. The Yeagerists probably would have taken Kiyomi hostage regardless, given her location.

He does have a backstory, he doesn't need a dead mom or a sick grandma to be fleshed out more.

When you think about it in terms of plot, in terms of characters the reader knows, yes, sure, that's the Doylist answer. In a Watsonian sense, though, speaking purely within the confines of the story, just because we don't see a next-in-line as readers doesn't mean there wouldn't be one.

Or how the fuck Magath survived the fall from atop the walls when he was nowhere near Pieck. Plot contrivance. Isayama seems to have had a bunch of cool scenes planned out in advance, and in order to string them together and make the plot flow, sometimes he has to make characters selectively retarded. It's a bit like the last couple of seasons of GoT, where D&D knew what the main plot beats were supposed to be but didn't put in the work to get the characters from A to B in believable fashion.
