In Chapter 123 we learn, that Eren was indecisive throughout their stay in Marley and he was on a brink of making a decision that night coupled with the fact that Mehmet reminded him of his childhood. To Eren at that moment, he was ready to step into the role of the devil and needed reassurance from Mikasa or was seeking connection from Mikasa to show him that at least there is still beauty left in the world. He wished she could reach for him, beyond the obvious, beyond the excuses, beyond the circumstances that brought them together. And this is where he tries to see the beauty in life through Mikasa. He was desperate to find a reason to stay human. But at that time Mikasa didn't understand what her simple honest words could have meant to him.

Reiner would have had a better arc if he sacrificed himself to pay back Marcel and let Falco become the Armored Titan. That would have been perfect exit, the Falco Armored Titan foreshadowing would make sense, and he actually would have been able to save one comrade instead of just standing there while some one kills themself to save him for the 4th time.
