The anime cut a lot of things from the Uprising Arc and Grisha's flashback. Just read the whole manga. It's better.

Uprising, which is what S3P1 covered, is much more fleshed out and competent in the manga, and the Marley flashback in S3P2 is more in-depth in the manga.
If you're planning on catching up on the manga, start from the start so you get used to Isayama's autism patterns.

I think you are misunderstanding something. Ymir isn't destroying the world because Eren ordered her to, but because she wants to. Their objectives happened to coincide. This happy ending you're imagining where your favorite side character eats Eren, stops the rumbling, and becomes a hero, unfortunately doesn't exist.

The anime is a decent adaptation, but there are some differences, especially in season 3. Try to read the manga from the start if you have the time, or from chapter 51 if you want to pick up the manga where the most significant plot alterations were made. There are some minor changes even in the first season that you might find interesting. But if you just want to catch up, you won't miss too much by skipping ahead to read the newer chapters.

The normalfag fanbase that came and stayed with Season 1 had essentially an entire lifespan in the 4 year gap between S1 and S2. By the time Season 2 released, most of them had either stopped caring about Attack on Titan or walked back their hype for Season 1 after hearing so many arguments as to why it was overhyped.
It's also that, for as strong of a hook as the beginning of Season 1 was, it didn't end in a way that made people particularly invested in any of the characters or the world. There were some theories, and a large amount of people ended up jumping to the manga, but the series's character building doesn't really take off until Season 2.
By now, a lot of people that either dropped the anime after Season 1 or dropped the manga at some point years ago (me) are starting to catch up in their respective medium, so I expect Season 4 will bring back a lot of the lost popularity. It's allegedly getting special I.G. treatment and, despite the delay, it is looking to be more well-done than S3.
