>gimmick is the protagonist isn't special and has the weakest power
>actually he's the chosen one and has the strongest power
Gimmick is the protagonist isn't special and has the weakest power
>protagonist unlocks six more powers
>mangaka wanted to be unique and did that "actually, the protagonist only has the ability to control stink bugs on a wednesday" intentionally seemingly weak gimmick power
>obviously got sick of writing around it and just gives them a kamehameha after a volume or two
>gimmick is that the protagonist is driven by self-consciousness complex to continually improve
>later on gets a massive nerf to even the playing field, instead of everyone else spiking
Asta
Not really but Antimagic is just too good to be considered weak
>gimmick is that the series is a parody of the genre
>it's a typical cliche'd example of the genre within a few volumes
>yahari
>story starts by establishing powers/rules
>author still sticks to it 20 volumes later while introducing new mechanics that don't undermine previous stuff
Best battle-harem, baby
>average mc gets isekai'd
>turns into a tactical genius that everybody loves
Isn't Asta physically buff
Form my opinions Yas Forums, was Soul Eater actually good?
I remember liking it, some 6 fucking years ago
HxH
A bit subverted. Asta really doesn't have magic. The anti-magic is not his which makes me think the story will end with him losing it.
Or they could say that the anti-magic was just blocking his real magic all along but that would be a cheap cop-out.
not him but he gets born with 0 magic in a world where everyone is a wizard, there's people with low magic but he's the only one with no magic at all, so he works out to compensate, when everyone goes to get their grimoires he gets a cursed one that has a sword coated in antimagic.
He still gets rekt by powerful wizards but antimagic can counter a lot of bullshit that should be crazy strong
I remember thinking that it was the most ludicrously generic thing I'd ever seen apart from the art style.
I'll re-read it I guess, since I've forgotten a lot of it.
I don't mind shonen-shit too much I guess. Fun to just have something fun every once in a while.
>new character suddenly introduced
>apparently a long-lost childhood friend of one of the protags
>was never mentioned previously
Being physically fit allows him at first hold the sword and be pretty fast at first, forgot to mention that
The anti-magic is a big boost, leading directly to powerful magic
>author can't do good foreshadowing
>instead relies on sudden reveals followed by long flashbacks explaining it
How often to you bring up people you haven't seen in 10+ years
>mc has special power or is a descendant of someone special
Fuck achieving things through hard work I guess
The criticism is more of it being a lazy plot device rather than the actual frequency of bringing up childhood friends
>protagonist isn't special, in fact he's below average for his universe
>manages to get through extremely one sided battles by utilizing his sub par abilities in unique and unconventional ways and being good at commanding his team mates
dude even has a harem he’s such a LN tier MC
Yeah, I'm thinking he's Kazuma, desu
O my father's dancing techniques.
>protag must becomes thing he hates
>somehow turns into analogue for WW1/2
Doubt it. I'm pretty sure the Witch bitch said he didn't have an ounce of magic in him. Pretty sure his anti-magic swords actively drain the mana of whoever's touching them too.
he blows everyone else out of the water
>Has beyond godlike levels of luck and can learn any skills as the 'weakest' class
Somebody post that Mineta pasta
*him
dammit like a homing beacon, magic-seeking missile
he's also kinda blackmailing god to get revived every time he dies though but can't say Kazuma isn't based
He jobbed to gravity while gravity jobbed to “not anti-magic” immediately after, so it is a shit
it actually is a pretty dogshit class.
later on in the LNs he learns intermediate magic and golem magic but because he's not a mage class it can't actually damage anything.
He also gets fucked over with equipment because all the good stuff is class locked and no one makes adventurer specific equipment.
the anti-magic comes from the grimoire and his swords, and the swords do drain the mana of whoever touches them, that's why most wizards become useless when they get stabbed Vetto being the exception because he's strong even without his magic enhancements
>the actual weakest
>his only gimmick is that he is friends with a bunch of strong people
>gets a "training arc" that ends with him just getting BTFO even harder in the next fight
>comes up with strategies that just barely keep him useful
>has never won a legitimate 1v1 in the whole series
>his few victories just make him that much more endearing
Best boy.
>Has the strongest power but can only ever use 10% of it.
>story is suposed to be a tragedy
>it has a happy ending
>can then use 20 percent
>can then use air pressure blasts
>can then use 7 different hidden powers
>character has no talent and has to work 10x as hard as everyone else to win
>ends up being crushed by the reality that he will never make it because of his shit genetics and literally just gives up
>Character has an incredibly OP move that could end the fight instantly
>The character never lands said move or never meets the right conditions for it.
Overhaul vs Mirio was one of the worst offenders for this. All he need was to graze Mirio with his pinkie and he would have insta-killed Mirio.
>mentally dumb but battle smart
>first thing they do is charge into battle screaming
HxH's power system contradicted itself within like 40 chapters
MHA is horrible for that in general. There are at least 3 villains with one touch = instant kill powers so any fight involving them is either an utter borefest or them curb stomping a bunch of mooks
>MC has incredibly strong power
>constantly loses in fights
name it Yas Forums
Or just spamming the same attack the Mirio could only dodge when he had his quirk. Even if he did manage to dodge it Eri sure wouldn't. Or he could have just wrapped him in concrete. After watching FMA, Overhaul seemed even more powerful than I initially thought. Dude pretty much had Alchemy, but didn't have to adhere to any of the basic rules.
No, Asta is a useless mc who got a random power boost to become the chosen one.
Same with Deku.
Overhaul is my least favorite villain in any manga, because he could have done ANYTHING else to achieve his goals. Overhaul could have become the greatest hero in the country and then changed things from the inside out. He could have become a travelling doctor who cures cancer and every other disease, becomes a messiah figure, and then convinces people quirks are bad etc.
but no, I need to be evil generic villain man and lose to assupulls.
99% style 1% substance.
Ok but have you heard of black clover tho?
How would you write a protagonist who is special but not overpowered?
see
what are flashbacks?
Osamu from World Trigger
Asta isn't that strong, Yami has been the one to finish his fights...
using magic
Make everyone else just as strong as them, but then give them a power that lets them win via creativity instead of brute force. Powers like "I get really strong when I'm angery grrrr" lead to fights always ending the same way, they just overpower their opponent.
>Overhaul is my least favorite villain in any manga, because he could have done ANYTHING else to achieve his goals.
I really wonder how he thought that using his adoptive father's granddaughter as lab experiment and juicing her for blood and organs would go over well with the Yakuza boss.
>it's not breaking the rules, they're just specialists lmao
>it's not breaking the rules, they're just needles that you can rip out from your head lmao
>it's not breaking the rules, they're just a previously unmentioned creature who can grant wishes with no consequences because of the power of love lmao
literally me irl
I can agree with the first part, but how is Asta the chosen one?
>mc is horribly overwhelmed in a fight
>a new power is suddenly unlocked moments before death
So fucking tired of assholes learning that they're carrying the BFG once they're down to 1HP.
still better than WIIIIIIIILLLLLLPOOOOOOWEEEEEEEEEEEEER
Also yoshikage kira
>some other people do it terribly so it's OK if I do it terribly!
I didn't even have to list the most memed asspull on Yas Forums, which was entirely based on Hisoka's WIIIIIIILLLLPPPPPOOOWWWWEEEER, as you put it.
And he still dies
>series starts with a variety of flavorful and unique skilled users battling on largely equivalent levels
>eventually some big bad shows up and the most powerful attack so far wiffs on him
>oh no, his ASTRAL SCORE/DEMON QUANTITY/WILL RANK/GOD QUOTIENT NUMBER is just too high!
Bad writing doesn't stop being bad if a character dies though
nen cpr
>strongest power
>lose every fucking x1 battle
no way fag
>CPR saves someone whose heart has been stopped for 15 minutes
>character boast about being able to achieve everything thorugh willpower alone
>turns out he's a descendant of a long lineage of powerful ancestors, on top of being trained by the greatest instructors of his village
Neji was right all along
>character has an ability so broken no one else would be able to lose with it
>he's aware he's a loser character and has no chance of ever winning
>finds ways of losing were the winner ends up worse by winning
Kumagawa was the best thing in the manga
This one never gets old.
Held together by his willpower, yes.
in a series where people can survive days without food, stupidly high electrical currents, poison, bazookas, etc
I thought the most memed asspull on Yas Forums was pic related
Lol what did neji say?
Neji's entire thing was that he believed their destinies were pre-determined and there was nothing that could be done to change it.
Rock Lee was fucked from the start
wouldn't have worked if his nen didn't have the properties of rubber and gum
Shield Hero? Yeah Shield Hero
Yeah and it destroys the whole point of having to do retarded asspulls in the first place
It was his bungee gum, which has properties of both gum and rubber
Not as bad Alluka
the latest chapter of CSM was probably the coolest way I've ever seen of establishing that a character is too powerful to fight. The Darkness Devil shows up and everyone's arms just fall off spontaneously because he's that strong
It's so fucking funny in retrospect
