Is the original Fullmetal Alchemist worth watching? Or should I just watch FMA: Brotherhood?
Is the original Fullmetal Alchemist worth watching? Or should I just watch FMA: Brotherhood?
Watch 03 for a darker, more somber but messier take. Watch brohood for a more put together, hype but more rushed (the 11 first episodes or so) take
They're both really good
I'd say they are both good but start with brotherhood and if you like the characters and the early story watch 03 afterwards. Like I said both are excellent because both have my cute husband Ed in but 03 is quite polarising and could put you off the franchise if you're not keen on it.
>Is the original Fullmetal Alchemist worth watching?
Not really. But it sure as hell beats the shitshow that is FMA Brotherhood.
The original is complete shit. Don't believe the contrarians.
The original is the manga you ding dong.
Both are good. I would suggest starting with the original and then move on to FMAB and Conqueror of Shamballa. Make sure to watch OVAs as well.
It is, but someone could probably tell you a cut-off point where it really starts making up it's own bullshit.
If you ride it out 30/51 episodes and have already put up with the anime only filler to that point you may as well finish it.
>Watching Shamballa after broho
Are you okay user?
I think the original has better character work ( specifically with Ed and Al ) personally.
Ed certainly gets a lot of good development but Al kind of stays a whiny bitch for the whole show, I get it he's a kid but Ed's only a year older than him. Not to mention Al literally gets a hard reset at the end of the series.
They are both bad but the original is less bad
Brotherhood: shounen for kids
Original: shounen for adults
You must be retarded. 03 deviated from the manga at the halfway point while Brotherhood stayed true to the mange throughout.
see
And what does any of that have to do anything with what he said? Is this what MAL does to your brain?
The original material, calling 03 ' the original' is stupid because ,as you pointed out yourself, it just isn't.
Read the op you retard. He refers to 03 as the original. Now stop being a faggot
03 was intriguing, skip episodes 4 & 11. fmab was fucking boring cookie cutter shit and shallow.
Yes. Watch both in production order. Don’t forget to read the manga as well. Thank you.
Yeah, I guess to be more accurate, the relationship between the characters seemed to be developed more than in Brotherhood. Scar was much better in 03 as well imo.
Lust was 1000x better in 03 but I guess she fills a different role so I don't really hold it against bh
My absolute favorite character change in 2003 was making Mustang the one who killed Winry's parents instead of Scar, focusing a lot more on his PTSD from the war made him and his goal to become the Fuhrer a lot more compelling to me when you see how badly he's still affected by what he went through.
Brotherhood is objectively the better version.

>objectively
Please go back to MAL where you belong.
Anyone who disagrees is either lying for contrarian points or a blind nostalgiafag.
Imagine defending an early 2000's filler ending.
>Imagine defending an early 2000's filler ending
oh, I hate the ending, but I like the "original" series
many animes at the same age (or before) suffered from "bad filler ending", but were well done in general
READ
THE
MANGA
oh, for the love of...
reminds me when someone asked "which HxH series" should he watch and retards like you said "READ THE MANGA"
but the user who asked was already reading the manga... and wanted to watch an anime exactly because he liked the manga
understand that someone sometimes wants to WATCH, not READ
The original anime has some interesting takes, but if you only want to watch one, just watch Brotherhood. That is the canon one, that has best more planned storyline, and is overall superior.
Is this the greatest anime of all time? I keep seeing this shit on top of lists. Is it like Shawshank on IMDB (which is also really good)?
>I keep seeing this shit on top of lists.
No, you keep seeing it on top of one specific list: MAL's list of anime ordered by their userbase's rating. And that's really all you need to know. It's pretty bad.
Brotherhood is unironically grabage if you start with it. You have to have seen the first one or read the manga for the first 20 or whatever episodes to be tolerable, and even then they're mediocre at best. Without that, the narrative is just incoherent and nonsensical; characters popping in and out without any set-up and acting on pre-established relationships that are never established in the actual anime itself and other insanely stupid shit.
All the parts that are bad about Brotherhood (such as, frequently, the humor) are also extra bad in those early episodes. Barry, for example, in Brotherhood, ends up being one of the worst characters in any anime ever as a result, with a character and narrative arc so dissonant it's like its straight out of the new star wars movies. The Nina story also stands out as absolute garbage in Brotherhood compared to 2003. Basically, any serious moment in the first half of the story is trash in Brotherhood, and the non-serious moments are mostly boring. Everything is just rushed through so they can get to the parts not covered by 2003.
So OP definitely should see 2003 first, or at least some of it. And retards should stop recommending people start watching Brotherhood blind, because that's a shit experience and a great way to get someone to *not* like Brotherhood. Can't remember exactly where to stop with 2003 though.
also, ep44 ending on shunkan sentimental instead of let it all out was just unethical poor planning in arranging those
I've went on a few lists to see what I should put on my own watchlist, it's usually the number 1.
It's definitely not the greatest anime of all time, but still a very good show, with decent story and satisfying ending (which is pretty rare for shonen).
>I've went on a few lists
Which ones, if I may ask? FMA Brotherhood is infamous for being overrated on MAL and practically nowhere else.
It's like a 7 or 8 imo
anilist
animeplanet
anidb (4th but there are more user ratings than the others, a significant amount)
imdb (the top 250 tv shows ranking has this as the highest rated, avatar doesn't count)
Watch original first.
I liked the ending movie of the original better then the brother hood ending.
Watching half of 2003 and then switching to Brotherhood is an equally shit experience because even before it diverges 2003 changes a lot of shit to fit its original story like the timeline reshuffling and the Lab 5 arc having a completely different ending. Its better to watch 2003 all the way through first and then Brotherhood all the way through.
Rent free as usual.
So, basically MAL clones with the same userbase. And IMDB for some strange reasons.
Well, try it out yourself and make up your own opinion. That's always the best remedy to such rating sites.
Yeah, this was basically just a searching of things to watch anyways
Watch both, they are basically entirely different experiences. 03 is darker and has more complex characterization for a lot of the characters, while Brotherhood is bigger scale and more epic.
>filler ending
Can you articulate arguments without falling on buzzwords?
Try lurking more, faggot. Also why are the mods 404ing this shit like they always do with "requests" threads?
> Shounen
> For Adults
Post your own Basedjack.
Do both.
Only watch Brotherhood. Don't bother with the 2003 fanfic.
its very sad make sure you have a tissue box
Which episode on 03 does it go away from manga?
i wanna start there
I like 2003 better because I enjoy Shou Tucker's downward spiral into ever deeper insanity, suffering and despair.
You probably need to start at the beginning. Even stuff it shares with the manga, it starts setting up deviations for the original stuff to come
I'm pretty sure 29 is the episode when the story mostly diverges entirely from the manga, thats the one where they find Wrath.
Also if you haven't seen 03 before I'd agree with and recommend starting from the beginning, there's a lot of differences even before it becomes a totally different story so you'd be missing out by skipping all of it.
aint nobody got time for that
>the fossil disease ep in 2003
What the fuck were they thinking?
If you are on here, you probably do
>shitposting for 30 minutes is the same as watching 50+ episodes
