Toji and Kensuke are everyman characters dropped on either side of Shinji's schizo ass to contrast and show how bizarrely adapted he is. Kensuke by being sort of dumb and thinking everything Shinji gets to do and see is just the coolest shit, and Toji by being intimidated by the responsibility and hazard, so much that he spent two episodes moping and too anxious to mention it over just being selected and scheduled for a test.

Toji just shoots some hoops and copes.
Kensuke is a freak tho, for real - in the manga. Nigger is in the woods with an M16 doing survivalist camping for fun.

Kind of? The mangaka was part of the original conceptualization with Anno, he was the character designer, personal friends, a Gainax founder, but Anno wasn't telling him what to do with it. It started in advance of the show based on some early drafts and got up to just before Ramiel before episodes started airing, didn't finish that until the show was over, and then it was adapting after the fact.

Thank god, someone who ACTUALLY watched and UNDERSTOOD the damn show!

Depends on who she's with, she seemed pretty damn into the idea of Kaji fucking her into the mattress.

The manga is unequivocally better just because of the shear amount of content that probably never made it into the Anime because of time/budget. The people that trash it are usually autistic.
Most of the characters are better, a couple are worse and the main reason why closeted waifufags trash it. Gendo is vastly expanded and humanized, as is Kaji, Toji and a few others.
The ending is hotly contested mostly by waifufags but honestly from a narrative standpoint is far better as well since it doesn't try to be "wow so deep bro lol melancholy" yet reaches the same moral (albeit more idyllically).

Added benefit being that lot of Anno's self-inserting is removed and a lot of the dumb Shinji haremshit type stuff is gone.
