The chapter starts with Masuzu's backstory from the invasion. She receives her oracle while evacuating and meets Tamako and Anzu. Together they spend a week protecting a school where refugees have gathered and become friends in the process. Eventually, the Taisha arrives and takes them in as heroes and miko, which worries Masuzu because she feels like Tamako's recklessness might kill her some day. Anzu gives Masuzu a book as a parting gift.
Back in the present, Masuzu spends the days after hearing the news of her friends' deaths half asleep in her room without going to school or eating properly, until Yoshika tells her about the time she almost drowned and developed her fear of water as a result; and basically says that she at least needs to keep on living for the others. When Masuzu later leaves her room, she learns from Hinata that Yoshika had an argument with the Taisha priests over whether to send Chikage back to her family, and that she has been confined to a separate facility for the time being after trying to run away. To cheer Masuzu up, Hinata takes her to the hospital where her uranophobic brother is being treated. When she learns that his recovery is making good progress, Masuzu finds the strength to overcome her depression.
Back at the miko dorm, she picks up the book Anzu gave to her years ago (Fahrenheit 451) and notices that one part has been marked with a pencil, a passage that states that people ought to leave something behind for others to remember them for. Thinking that Anzu must have taken the message to heart, Masuzu travels to Marugame, searches Anzu's room and discovers her notes with valuable observations about the fairies and their side effects. That night, Masuzu dreams of how their lives would have played out if the two of them had survived. She realizes that even though she won't come to terms with their deaths, she can move ahead carrying the sadness in her heart.
And then, the news of Chikage attacking Wakaba hits.
