I really enjoyed this show, especially the last 3 episodes, especially with mami loding her head again, and sayaka going absolutely metal with her regen powers.
But having 1/3 of the show being a fine introduction
1/3 being a boring character introductions that dont explore characters to the same extent
and the last 1/3 actually being fucking kino(Holy mami, Sayaka regen), does not make a good show.
Inu Curry visuals carried this show.

It's just a gacha cash-in with none of the essential Madoka people from the Magica Quartet and only Gekidan Inu Curry to make it look or feel like it's related to PMMM. It's no more 'Madoka' than the dozens of Madoka imitators we've had for the past ten years but it says something that even the franchise itself has resorted to this, and that we coming going back to it.

Basically, it didn't really go 'wrong' unless that's meant conceptually. It's like if Daybreak Illusion happened to look like Madoka. This project was always wrong insofar as it isn't Madoka and isn't even really trying to be. So-so anime like Magia Record are a dime-a-dozen; it would've been far worse for the Magica Quartet to reunite only to turn out something below par.

My mistake: Ume was involved in the character design for the game. However, she was not involved in the anime's character design. Shinbo had more involvement in the anime, but not in any serious creative capacity.

SHAFT animating doesn't really mean a thing if the studio hasn't assembled the same creative talent. With no Magica Quartet, no Kajiura, and only the license to make an anime that looks like Madoka, it's still effectively a Madoka imitation.

Yes, it's the center of Gretchen's interior and speculated to be the true form of the Witch

Narratively it was a mess that might have worked better in a game since most RPGs give a lot of exposition, side stories, and opportunities to interact with mechanics that would not fly as an actual anime.

But by adapting what I'm assuming are set up for dungeons every 2 episodes the story never felt like it had any focus.

In a single episode we get introduced not only to Iroha but a bunch of magical girls that won't affect the rest of the plot other than talking about the misteries: How does that city save magical girls? Why is this city so infested with witches? What are Uwasa? Where is Iroha's sister? Who is this tiny kyuubey?

At the end of the season we only get one and a half answer after a lot of fluff and weak characterization.

Also the cameos from the original Madoka cast feels like cheap meaningless fanservice instead of an opportunity to explore these characters in this scenario.

It was not that the source material was bad, it was that the script and series planning was terrible.

no, the last three episodes are just exposition about the nature of the magical girls that you know already from Madoka, and then Mami gets brainwashed and fights Sayaka just to have a climax with no relevance to the plot. It's really unengaging.

The original had a thrilling setup that immediately introduced a mysterious anti villain, who hinted to know more about Kyubey, that kept you watching; thence it shook the viewer by killing a character that was touted as a main character in promotional material in the third episode, and came with dramatic reveal after dramatic reveal.

Magia Record had no real interesting mystery, no interesting characters, and no interesting reveals.

There is nothing to explain, it is just a form of dumping.
