Kakine honestly still has remnants of that selfless personality, and we see that with not only how he cares for Ringo, but how he wishes to prevent blood being shed by her hands. Perhaps, if not subconciously, Kakine wanted to be Ringo's hero. He brushed it off, but I feel that him trying to save Ringo was his actual answer to her plea.
He tries to convince himself that the city's rules don't apply to him, and he tries to make it so by negotiating with Aleister. He ultimately desires freedom, and the wings, which are activated via subconcious reflex, validate this. Kakine's wings are birthed from a desire for freedom, no doubt due to his childhood as a labrat. This desire was formed by a lifetime of being chained.
Obviously, with more content on Kakine, we could get more depth to his personality. I would actually want him to win BR for reasons beyond meme ones now, cause I really like his attitude and the way he interacts with the world. Chuuya did it quite well with showing Kakine's face being somewhat satisfied by Hamazura's stand, maybe a nod to that "normal rules don't apply to me" type stuff. Hamazura, according to the city's rules, should have died after all.
All in all, all these new revelations put his scenes in an entirely new light, which makes makes me wonder. He lashed out at GREMLIN for their attempt to "use him as a tool", what's going to come out of this? He's most likely going to realize that even if he'd escape Aleister, a godlike being exists in the world. He won't truly be free, what means will he pursue to be free from a magic god?

The first time I read the LN, Kakine always seemed to be a pretty one-dimensional villain. Really glad that the recent spinoff has added the much-needed emotional depth to his character.

The thing with Kakine is he relies heavily how his dark matter interacts with things. Mixing that with magic could to all sorts of shit that he certainly wouldn't expect. Accel encountered magic tons of times and could only understand it after the platinum wings. Even he could usually keep it from hitting him he couldn't send it where he wanted and was under the risk of getting hit. Wings bumping into magic defense might not go how kek wants, he probably won't just phase through like with DA. Hell Mirates had armor that could hold up against Accel.

Black wings ins't stronger than Dark Matter kakine. The only reason Rensa won against Beetle is because he hasn't spammed clones like NT6
