It's just really well executed. You could name a bunch of things that inspired it or tread similar ground (GaoGaiGar, Getter Robo), but it is uniquely polished and cohesive and I believe it stands with, if not above, the greats that came before it.

TTGL's animation is overrated.
The TV' series' animation is not bad by any means, but only its two movies have extremely impressive animation.

I didn't say it was unique. It is distinctly un-unique. Originality is not a necessary component of something being good, let alone being great. It is an excellent show on its own merits, not because it's trying to be unique.

It's one of the most complete coming of age stories in anime and actually has an understanding of consistent themes and motifs. While the story is simple, that alone makes the story more effective than 90% of existing anime.

That paired with decent animation, stellar art, and a unique/iconic soundtrack make TTGL one of the best Mecha of all time and probably one of the best anime released.

A fine opinion. I was more referring to everything else. Pretty much every character is improved with the time skip, and seeing how they adapted to a post-war society added some much needed nuance.

If you had read Getter or watched the OVAs you'd know that TTGL's optimistic and uplifting tone and plot differ vastly from Getter's borderline horror story. They really don't have much in common besides surface level plot devices, and even those serve completely different thematic purposes between the two (compare Spiral Energy's positive representation of humanity's heroic willpower to Getter Rays' indiscriminate assimilation and resultant body horror). Nothing like pic related in TTGL.

It's unique stylistically and thematically, but the actual mecha designs aren't very unique, and that's not a problem. TTGL isn't about the mecha or the plot, it's much more about symbolism and character development
