Basically its the best choice since mother and her kids have the closest relationship possible and the sync between the pilot and the robot would be way better. Also the robot would go berserk just to defend the pilot. I doubt the same would happen if the pilot was some random nobody.

What at first looks to be a "giant robot" slug fest is actually about a conspiracy of some super rich and powerful "do gooders" behind the scenes trying to obtain godhood and "heaven" without taking God into account. See the follow-on film, End of Evangelion. It'll either blow your mind or bum you out. Read the manga by Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, Fills in a lot of "holes" and makes the anime look like an abbreviation.

Except they all relate to eachother pretty much perfectly. Nearly everything is connected by the same threads of Freudian analysis (which Japan loves for some reason) or Anno's own perspective on life.

The show wears all its themes on its sleeve, points out exactly what it's talking about, and leaves very little to interpretation besides a few deliberately vague plot threads at the end. You're probably one of the millions of people that use "pretentious" for anything vaguely outside of standard storytelling, but don't know what an actually pretentious show looks like.

I was shocked to hear that anyone though Evangelion was considered "deep" when it's extremely straightforward and commits the grave sin of assuming the viewer isn't a complete retard.

The EVAs are NOT robots you dummy plug. They are organic.

The characters really are shallow for the most part and most Eva fans are too blinded by the way the show explores specific psychological issues to see how little development there actually is for each individual. Most characters in the show are some variation of two categories, 'obvious' characters who clearly wear their problem on their sleeves and mostly seem to lack depth beyond what we are directly shown (exemplified by Asuka, who boils down to desperately needing validation from others that she's a talented and desirable person while reflecting on little beyond this) and 'obscure' characters who's motivations are perpetually mysterious through their run-time, leaving the viewer to fill in the blanks and imagine some set of thoughts and experiences that could possibly fill in the mind of such a complex seeming character (Rei and Gendo mostly fitting this) despite these not being explored in a way that actually sheds light on this potential depth.

Praise Eva for reasons you believe are possibly warranted (like, surprisingly, its use of symbolism to elicit emotion, which gets shit on way too much), but its "character depth" is hands down the most over estimated aspect of it, and really is based considerably on a combination of super in-your-face exposition where characters bluntly declare their psychology to the camera, and hints at the possibility of much greater depth that can't really be pinned down to anything specific.

Issues regarding Anno's own personality type, and reluctance to engage with emotions despite being very emotional in fear of it turning to indulgence, also because they can be logical when they need to be and tend to select when they're emotional, Gendo's case I think is just that he doesn't put up with all that and tries to focus on his higher understanding.
Case in point: "He is not very good", "at what", "living". Living mean engaging your head in all the worldly matters.

No he is not, he put himself on line despite his fears to keep the injured girl from having to pilot it again. Also went up against the angel despite being told not to by people forcing him into robot to begin with, to save two guys in Eva with him. Still got into the fucking robot after having arm broken/bone crushed and feeling the pain of a blast going through the skull.

Also it doesn't spoonfeed after dropping 100 hints, that communication is enough.
