This is my favorite example of the author playing with the chronology. He misdirects the reader into thinking that this is a continuation of the previous chapter but that was resolved two volumes ago in chapter 118 and 119.

Yeah, based on the last chapter I was prepared to hate the ending but this is sort of neat. Frankly I doubt there would be any satisfying way to end SoreMachi at all, so I can appreciate the author just admitting they can't think of anything and using the manga's messy chronology to do it in a bit of a clever way which fakes the reader out. It's somehow more fitting than if the author attempted a satisfying conclusive ending which would inevitably fall short and leave the series on a poor note.
I do wish I could read the afterword to this one though.

I know a lot of people weren't comfortable with this ending at the time, but I always felt like it was perfect for SoreMachi. It's cheeky and clever. It's not conclusive because there's no reason for it to be. The town keeps turning.
