Gon is basically a an anti-goku.
Togashi uses him to illustrate how that happy-go luck shonen protagonist Goku as wouldn't work in real life. Gon gets repeatedly fucked over because of his personality, which ends up in the incident with Kite, this makes Gon whole personality of "I can take on the world" crumbles, his grief and self-doubt over that event culminate on his trade for power to murder Neferpitou, a event that mirrors the SSJ transformation, the difference is that it solves practically nothing and only damages his relationships with the others around him, Gon's fit of rage over his failure is not rewarded like what happens with Goku but rather criticized.

The differences between both characters is intentionally made clear in the first chapter of HxH which starts with Gon fishing, much like Goku did at the start of DB:
Gon has to wait for the fish he wants for over a day, and in order to catch it, he requires to make a leverage with the tree. This shows how weak he is compared to Goku in relation to most of his opponents. Gon is never able to beat an antagonist in a fair 1-on-1. He has to use tricks, and in one case, Kamikaze to beat anybody. This also means Gon is smarter, and while both show a similar drive, Gon comes off as more selfdestructive, due to his weakness.
Goku fishes to satisfy his own needs. Gon fishes to move closer to his goal. Gon doesn't really fight for fun, and while he enjoys most of the things he dedicates himself to, he is far more goal-oriented.
Then there is the call to adventure. Goku is invited to bodyguard Bulma and he is free to go. He has nobody to come back to in the mountain. Gon's goal of becoming a Hunter is opposed by his aunt Mito, who doesn't want him to leave their home. Gon loves her, but he has to step on her feelings to move forward in his journey. While Goku and Gon are similarly selfish, Gon is completely aware that he is hurting others. And does not care enough to stop. This makes him more grey and ruthless.

Dragon Ball up until the ending of the Freeza arc is pretty much unmatched to this day in terms of being a traditional battle shonen.
The Cell Arc is sloppy and the Buu Arc just reeks of exhaustion, but before that is legitimately excellent work.
As far as this prompt goes, Goku is better than Gon up until mid Saiyan Arc. After that Goku makes a change that worsens his character significantly. At that point Gon overtakes him.

If we are talking about deconstructions of shonen protags, Yuzuko Mawatari from the manga Teppu does it the best.
She runs basically the standard happy-go-lucky personality, but its undercut by its cause and effects.
Its caused by her sociopathy making nothing stick to her, she doesn't feel bad about losing, about hurting others, about spending hours working on a single technique because she just doesn't realize that she should.
As for the effects being destroyed by someone and then having them act incredibly happy and supportive and kind towards you basically breaks the wills of her opponents. She's feared in setting because people can instinctively tell she's not right in the head.

I know why he does this, because he realizes the average reader is too retarded to tie their shoes correctly let alone interpret a comic with a slight bit of obfuscation (if any of you have seen the last few CSM threads you'll know what I'm talking about). But its still poor practice. For as much time to make things polished and complex but understandable as he has, HxH doesn't reflect this.
Furthermore, Dragon Ball is still pretty much unmatched outside of maybe Baki in terms of choreography.
