I just read the manga chapters that covered this episode, and they changed something important. In both, the big oni protects the newt thing, then gets knocked away. In the anime, golem resumes attempting to kill newt thing, and is stopped by Somali, who shields newt thing. In the manga, golem attempts to finish off big oni, ignoring newt thing.
Somali protecting newt thing and golem not attempting to finish off big oni are two very big changes. It makes golems fear of losing control sound more like an excuse, and puts more value (perhaps than was intended) in Somali's kindness. After all, there's a big difference in protecting your ally (big oni) and protecting the one who was going to kill and eat you (newt thing).
