No, but I can't help but feel that the ED was uncomfortably "Western" for some reason I can't place my finger on.

Calarts was already an ill defined term from the get go but I see it's already a buzzword at this point. Couple of questions

1. How is this Calart?
2. What other examples you have to say this is the "future of anime" when even if this was even close to Calart Trigger produces only flops and aren't trendsetters in any way or form?
3. Who would be the audience for this when Japan is not into it and the west can instead just watch something made by someone who actually went to the California Institute of the Arts.

This was true in the 60's, but anime has been imitating itself since then. Second generation animators took inspiration from things like Conan, third generation watched Evangelion and Akira and stuff like that. maybe 1/1000th of the animators in Japan would quote Disney, or anything from the west as inspiration. Disney invented and perfected animation as a medium, but that doesn't just make everything after it until the end of time derivative.

The current popular style of animation in Japan and the current popular style of animation in America are entirely different. You can't make the argument that Japan watched mickey mouse and there was a straight line to where we are today. The points you made are almost a requirement for the medium to function, animating in a more realistic style is incredibly expensive.

Not quite, at around the 80s the japanese artstyle truly found its own unique polish, then the otaku decided to industrialize it and kill the passion behind the craft, just like the US.

There are good looking CalArts shows that I wouldn't mind seeing anime using the same style at all.

Shows like MaoMao have a solid animation.

I dont know about that, but I would say its invariably under-produced. Made cheaply, with low frame rates and lacking in dynamism, making it look static and low effort. Thats why people always confuse Avatar for real anime, because unlike every other western animation that has emulated the anime artstyle, the characters move and emote like anime characters. Western animation tends to be used as a vehicle for messages that are up their own ass self-aggrandizing, as opposed to the anime message of the power of friendship and teamwork, so if that's what you mean by narcissistic then I would be inclined to agree.

Western graphic arts are a dead end. Any western artist worth a shit at least dabbles in anime style.
