The only scene I liked in any of them was the part where the old man and the young man were taking Canti's head to the dump. The young man calls it "priceless treasure" and the old man calls it "junk".
It was a very tongue-in-cheek jab at the people who demanded a sequel to FLCL.

Alternative was just a female teenage girl version of flcl with haruko as some weirdo sexual marry poppins.
Progressive was the real shitstain that brought nothing new to the table and just a complete fucking retread of the original with surface level understanding of the themes.

FLCL was just a big fucking metaphor for puberty and the problems that come with it. Or rather how sexuality factors into your psyche as a boy going through puberty.
A sequel with a 20 something naota coping with young adult sexual frustrations and problems and haruko as the avatar of his problems would've been really fucking kino and would have brought new things to the table while retaining the core concept. Some day I'm gonna write a fanfic detailling this.

No, Alterntaive and Progressive were made to cash off the original without any genuine heart or creativity of what made the og good. Both sequels are literally the HBO Watchmen of anime.

Progressive was really the most half-assed "lets get it over with" contract work I've ever seen. Like they only poorly aped the surface level stuff and then crammed explanations for the flcl scifi lore that nobody asked for into it.
That's like bordering on sabotage. And the subpar animation was adding insult to injury.

But progressive was a fucking crime against anime.

I kinda liked the basketball episode from alternative.
When kana's boyfriend goes up to her and instead of confessing prattles on about how he HAD TO feel up harukos upper thighs made me chuckle, because it was such a authentic teenage moment.

I was disappointed that Naota nor his robot never came back. I wanted them and Haruko not just Haruko and random new people.

Did anyone ever mentioned how much of a 30 year old boomer haruko was in flcl alternative? With her rapping, kebab making and basketball playing. They just missed having her gulp down some tall boys of red bull energy drinks

It's honestly a shame we never got this.. maybe they thought young people wouldn't like it because they don't have the nostalgia of seeing the original. Also I heard that flcl was only a success among western audiences. Maybe they tried to cater to that demographic specifically and that's why alternative and progressive were such shit?

Flcl was such a gem I don't think anything they could make would ever come close. Maybe they knew that and just didn't care.

What exactly went down there? Like in the production process - didn't adult swim just toss a bunch of money to japan and tell them to make more flcl and they just made "more of the same" or something without actually looking at what they were doing? That's why it feels so fucking stale and redundant.

I'm sure if progressive didn't exist and they just released alternative as a sidestory everyone would be much more positive about the entire thing. Progressive just poisoned the well.

I remember seeing interviews when the new seasons were announced. I think originally the creators wanted to do more of the same or a continuation, but instead decided it was better to hand things off to younger anime developers because they felt it would make more sense in context or the story (being about youth)

And yes Adult Swim basically threw money at them since flcl was a sleeper hit for them. Another reason why the English dub came out before the Japanese version, which is totally unheard of for literally every other anime. Thinking maybe too many western hands touched it and it was doomed from the start.

Why was the animation so incredibly SHIT if they had tons of money? Alternative looked slightly better, but progressive was laughably bad.

If you actually watched alternative you clearly didn't think progressive was that bad. Most people who watched progressive threw up in their mouths at how awful it was and realized that nothing in the next sequel could possibly rectify any of it. Get some better taste and spend your time watching something that actually deserves your attention.

This, and Japanese culture is the perfect setup to examine these problems due to their excessive stress-inducing suicidal work culture.

FLCL was a masterpiece when it came out.
For an early digital anime it looked fucking amazing and was an early example of the potential of digital animation.

Prog and Alt had 0 innovations visually, and were lackluster everywhere else.
Even people who never got it still go back to FLCL because of how beautiful it looked.
There is pretty much nothing pulling anyone towards prog and alt.

I only saw FLCL for the first time a few years ago (maybe like 2015/14) and I still felt way better about it than the new stuff.

I heard flcl was just meant to be demo for the animators to develop a style before going on to make a "real" anime (the drill one with the mechs idk) it must've been surprising when they got such a positive reception from the west.

Alternative was ok and inoffensive. It's a sidestory "what if flcl was for girls" and handles female puberty and hormone stuff. It's actually clever in the sense that it understands that female puberty is different from male puberty and kind of manages to make a teenage girl in the late 2010s version of flcl.
Progressive just shat the bed so hard people wrote it off as shit and didn't give it any chance.
Like if you see it as some FLCL gaiden side story thing it's charming.

I don't know about that, but what I do know is that FLCL had a very loose creative process.
A lot of the randomness was various crew members adding in things they liked and found cool.
So when there's a reference it comes from a genuine place.
The sequels were trying to copy that without any of that passion.
It leaves you asking questions like why have guitars in the sequels if the people animating them don't think they're that cool?

If you want a modern anime that has the same freedom in the behind the scenes process and spirit as FLCL look no further than space dandy and the anime expo short films.

I think you kinda nailed why progressive in particular felt so fucking lame.
Because it was stuff that 70s and 80s kids thought was HOT SHIT in 1999 warmed up for a 2019 audience.

Alternative has a few neat ideas, especially with it being a flcl for girls and haruko being the designated boyfriend-stealer.

Both really bad and disappointing in different ways. Both had blobs of good ideas here and there but ultimately very mediocre. Alternative would be an ok CGDCT show without the FLCL stuff bolted onto it I guess. If we could go back in time and let them try again except pour everything into just one sequel instead of two, and I had a say in which one that would be used as the skeleton? Progressive I guess. I think Alternative is better but art style wise Progressive is what I imagine "CN revives FLCL" would be.

I still had fun watching and talking about it though.

I think Progressive could be ok if they focused the story more on Hidomi's paraphilia and repressed sexual nature. Flesh her character out by finding creative ways communicate her inner world instead of just giving her a boy to fall in love with. Maybe cut it down to a 90 minute movie instead of 6 episode series. Also I liked Alternative's hand painted style backgrounds and the fact that each episode showcased many settings, work that quality into Progressive too. I don't know, there is a lot of good they could have done if they just had all the talent consolidated on one project instead and were working with real inspiration.

Why the fuck was Haruko even in this? Since Alternative was meant to be about girls, I imagined we would have gotten a new male character to take her role. It's obvious it was only done for marketing reasons because Haruko is is iconic. "Hurr durr, if it's FLCL it has to have Haruko!" even though Naoto, Mamimi, Canti, and Ninamori were just as iconic. It's hard to comprehend what these idiot devs were even thinking.

The problem is that some people like you and AS apparently want flcl to be some endless repeat of "teenage problems" and haruko comes in. That's really fucking limiting. Nothing in progressive needed to be told and it's the complete wrong approach.

Haruko was the sexual marry poppins who flaunted her ass, fucked the boyfriends and then told the girls an important lesson about being themselves.
To me it feels like one of those 80s cartoon spinoffs. Baby flintstones or something.
