My assumption is that it's the reverse of nen mastery slowing down the aging process(leading to all the ancient nen masters). So, like Gon-san, it's trading a lifespan for power.
I could be wrong, but I don't think that it's anything like Death Note where his fated time of death exists and is magically pushed forward.
