How do you make a good foil/rival character?
How do you make a good foil/rival character?
homolust
You make the MC and the rival females.
Make him nore based than the MC AND not a c*ck like Vegeta
Give the river their own motives separate from the main character. Just because they're the rival doesn't mean their existence should depend on the MC.
don't make him an eternal one note edgelord like saucegay
Edgeworth is based because you can see he has genuine fondness for Phoenix, Maya, Gumshoe, Franziska, etc. Plus they weren't afraid to show off quirkier aspects of his personality, like how he gets utterly embarrassed by Oldbag
Be balanced. Don't make their every thought process revolve around the main character. In many aspects, remember that they are 'rivals' for a reason and can surpass the main character.
Otherwise you would have to go the full extreme with guys like Kaiba, who is so absurdly obsessed that he just ends up based. But even then, Kaiba's actions extend far beyond Yugi and impacted the world as a while.
It's 100% in the setup. Where your good character is so must your rival be, not jobbing.
dont try to make him direct opposite of mc(good/evil),give his character depth and good logic behind his action ,give us some good backstory so we can relate to him
>good example of this is Teach in one piece
Edgeworth has lots of cute quirks, like his inability to get witnesses to state their names. But being closet Steel Samurai fan is probably the one that stuck the most.
1. Take main character
2. Make him a different color
3. ???????
4. PROFIT
This is honestly not that far off. The color theory is very often used to symbolize relationship between characters, opposing colors is a quick and efficient way to convey rivalry. It's as simple as red vs blue.
Similarly, might be what for example Togashi was going for when he made Meruem's color scheme with green dominating it.
Just give him an opposite colored hat. Problem solved.
Why is it so hard to get people to state their name and occupation?
He's got to be cooler than the MC. Gotta have that secret envy component.
By letting the sidekicks also have great interaction with the rival.
But user, you didn't posted the best sidekick of all time.
>take the main character
>identify an important element of his personality
>change it
kys. Best sidekick is concept art Athena.
looks like some Layton-ass shit
Still better than game Athena.
A good rival needs to have a genuine reason to "play" with the main character; be it a sense of sportsmanship, or a difference of ideology.
There needs to be codependence.
It needs to go beyond a mere childish desire to be the very best.
The pride of the characters must be at play.
This is why I hate Majima / Kiryu rivalry despite loving both characters
Just make a Vergil lol.
The main character has to have interesting traits to play off of to begin with. A mirror image of a turd is still a turd.
Yeah, it has to become personal, intimate. For a good part of the match, Washizu just really really wants to kill Akagi, but it's not just for the sake of blood, things get personal really fast.
How old is she?
Why do you think they had the crossover
Wright and Edgeworth are not really rivals since the first game. They're more like friends who are gay for each other and are too scared to say it out loud because it would be awkward and destroy their relationship.
26 like Ema
Hey. Fuck you. That was an amazing crossover
Ema is for Polly
Too bad he got MOGGED by his rival prosecutor AND adoptive brother
Give one of them blue clothes and the other red clothes.
>Here's phoenix being retarded and layton being a perfect infallible genius in a half-baked setting for 20 hours
no it wasn't
by letting him cuck the MC's girl, get the MC killed, and eventually become the main character
Emma is for Lana.
>phoenix being retarded
When is that never the case. That sounds like Phoenix to me. He normally always bullshits his way in court until he wins.
>perfect infallible genius
He is a professor, you know. He didn't buy into the "magic exists" nonsense like a retard like Phoenix would.
>half-baked setting
I didn't mind the whole isekai medieval setting at the time. It did it long before that setting became an overused fad.
Haven't played Dual Destiny and Spirit of Justice.
Are the trials getting more ridiculous and contrived?
Spirit of Justice ended on the best case I've played, not that everyone agrees.
To your question is up to you to decide, but both are great and you should play them, DD is the best title ever, fuck haters.
Make them a loli.
Theres no bad ace attorney games. Just some are better than others.
That's the worst example possible. Didn't they end up living together and raising a daughter?
Dual Destinies story was kind of meh. The best cases are 5 and the DLC, and the best parts were the prosecutor and the detective. Gimmick was cool, but cases were not as satisfying.
SoJ was really good and really nailed it on everything except that the prosecutor sucked fucking ass. Fun cases, good sidekick and gimmick, funner cases, it was probably above AA2 from the original trilogy. The last case is a wild ride.
Also I dislike the fact that Phoenix still hasn't fugged and impregnated adult Maya. Fucking nips this is why their birth rate keeps falling
No. Phoenix raised his daughter alone and became an alcoholic pianist and gambler. Edgeworth was doing his Investigations games, interpol stuff, and became the boss prosecutor of Japanifornia.
SoJ is Apollo Justice: Trials and Tribulations and the last case is the GOAT.
People will be blinded by Nostalgia, but SoJ is PEAK AA
To be honest Phoenix to this day still is unbeaten in poker
And Rayfa was delicious
All games are great specially DD, SoJ only "flaw" was the noodle case but it was short enough to not become unbearable, also Athena have way too many haters so people can get a little bit too judgemental over her.
Gay subtext.
Also this.
I liked the noodle case. It was silly and VERY japanese but the Blackquill weeaboo autism was amusing
>Spoiler
I don't know. Would they really work as love interests?
Her Objection Remix this time was really good. And the DLC with Larry was PEAK AA wackyness
you can also go beyond and make him the ridiculous autistic edgelord that only cares for salty runbacks and his little brother
They’re not the greatest games, only because the original trilogy will always be the best, but I personally thought they were fun. They tried adding new gameplay elements to the series, which some fans didn’t like, but I thought it was fun.
As for Spirit of Justice, a lot of fans didn’t like that Maya, Larry and Edgeworth were brought back, as it felt shoehorned and didn’t let characters like Apollo, Athena and/or Trucy get more development. At the same time, fans have been asking what had happened to Maya, Larry and Edgeworth since AA4.
In short, fans are never satisfied
I find so annoying that in AJ, everyone is on your side helping you on the case, while in PW trilogy everyone is against you (except for the last game probably). Are DD and SoJ the same?
>all these AAtards
lmao danganronpa is better because it has cute girls and isn't boring as fuck
They live together in the one with the samurai inmate prosecutor once he's back and practicing again. Part time in France where Edgeworth lives, and he stays with Phoenix in "los angeles" when he's back in town. That was like the one case where he prosecuted for the mock trial. I think it was 5. I thought it was weird but they might have backtracked in 6.
Am I the only one who’s immersion wasn’t destroyed by all the Japanese cultural references within “Los Angeles”? Maybe it’s due to all the anime I’ve watched, and all the videa I’ve played in my life, but California does have a big Japanese community, so it’s not that far fetched to find a touristy Japanese village in LA
I’m from NYC tho, so I could be wrong, but we have our own melting pot here.
I just headcanon'd it as the same as LA in Blade Runner where the Japanese have culturally taken over. Given the state of the courts and the sci-fi technology it works pretty great.
