Honestly, I don't think I ever liked an anime protagonist, the closest ones would be medicine seller from Mononoke and inspector from Acca. Generally I like characters from the supporting cast more. Manga on the other hand, depending on the mangaka, can have some good examples of well done protagonists. Let's say anything by Matsumoto, Taniguchi or Fukomoto would be my picks.
Basara only shines a bit in Dynamite, overall he is shit like the rest of the cast. Actually I heard user prefers Dublin or whatever his name is over him.

Basara was a really good character imo.
I love characters that have a very strong sense of who they are and what they want to accomplish, but his show did not do him justice at all.
The Dynamite 7 OVA was great though, Basara's at his best when his ideals are being confronted and he has to push through a barrier in order to prove that his way can work.

I first opened the manga because of curiosity. I stayed and got invested because of Ranma. I rooted for him to win the whole time I was learning about the series, and I was bummed he never got a cure or a decent girl. To this day, he's still my favorite shonen protagonist over the vast array of stock "idiot heroes whose only flaws are being gluttons and absolute morons outside of combat".
