Guns were already bad enough, but the biological differences between the species, are one the key things to making this universe to interesting. Why even have anthro animals at this point? In my opinion, the moment the manga started going downhill was when Legoshi dropped out of school. It really just gutted his the supporting cast and in turn the drama elements, something that was one of the manga's strengths up to that point. I get that it makes sense thematically, but the stories they tell now easily still could've taken place without the drastic change.
