In Japan it's all BL nowadays. Bara as a term has fallen out of use, it's mostly used by western gay artists and fujos who want to feel "enlightened". In Japan it's Geicomi for gay men and muscle BL which has a lot of crossover appeal. Both still fall under the BL umbrella. The term yaoi doesn't get used as much any more, and shonen-ai never gets used and wasn't really a word for non-adult BL in the beginning anyway.
But you're right about the origin of the name. The word people want for that bodytype is gachimuchi, not bara.
