This is good. It makes Grey less useless and gives us a backstory on her (which was missing) and also gives us a possible avenue of future development for her. Retards will only complain about muh "no stakes" though.

It's too early for any BB to die for real. And Gauche's "death" was also underwhelming.

Grey's magic is extremely versatile and she can have almost any affinity because of it. Magic becomes stronger with feelings, and Grey loves Gauche so it's only natural for her to manifest her magic here.

There was no reason to make Gauche look like he was going to die here, except to give us blue balls when he doesn't.
