Lelouch's charisma and arrogance carried him further than his intelligence ever did which was part of the point that the show was demonstrating, it's that the writing got really bombastic and contrived at really critical moments. What the show does good it does really well (pacing, music, setting) but what it does wrong it also just goes fubar on (writing in R2 and towards the end of R1, model consistency, endless love triangles).
I liked the ending though, even though most people didn't.
