I think it wouldn't be a good look for shounen jump if such a badly performing manga got an anime just due to its author. It's not even just doing mediocre, it's around the bottom in sales and rankings.

It kinda does, not fully original content anymore, but it adds stuff like "what was one of the straw hats doing when they were offpanel in the manga?" Zoro's time with Yasu got several original scenes in the anime.
