but eva IS original, there is a clear inspiration and a desire to deviate from the norm based on their mutual interests, anno clearly wanted to acknowledge the faults in the mecha genre and turn it into a more empathetic hero's journey instead of "man does thing because man should do thing", and that's just with the mecha aspect of the show
