I just finished Hokuto no Ken, and honestly, this was one of the best anime I have seen in a long long time.
Fist of the North star

Yeah, HNK is great. What did you like about it the most?
Of course. Most Kino shounen of all time.
more like most mediocre. fma is way better
Nah fuck off. HnK is superior.
Is the anime series actually good?
From the screenshot I saw I always thought it looked cheap and bad animated.
I agree that it's very kino. The limited animation forced them to come up with some really creative and pretty shots. Not to mention it's manly as fuck. Also, being that it's one of the first shonen series out there, it's kinda interesting that it isn't dated at all. Shonen series took all the wrong lessons from this one. Here are some Shonen tropes that HnK avoids:
>Death actually matters and popular characters doesn't get resurrected, thus the stakes are always high.
>Defeat doesn't mean friendship, so most of the characters Kenshiro beats, don't become allies.
>It absolutely avoids all of that pacifism and thou shalt not kill bullshit. If you are evil, you deserve to die.
>Each arc does not contain dozen episode long training arc.
Also the characters look somewhere between 25-30, making the action and drama feel much more real, than it would be with 14 year olds.
What I liked most about it was how it didn't feel like your typical shonen. Instead it felt like a classic greek tragedy, with heroic yet flawed, larger than life characters, fighting against fate and living through tragedy. It absolutely balanced classic melodrama, humor, heart and horror. Also it made me shed some manly tears here and there (Rei's death, Toki vs Raoh and etc.). That and the cast was very memorable, with many standouts. Also, the voice acting was amazing.
Yeah you pretty much summed it up.
It was a no man's land and if you weren't strong enough you simply were a slave or died.
Its decent.
Pacing is slightly worse than the manga, but its all analog, so there are no shortcuts that really kills it in terms of quality.
I only wish I had watched it in higher quality.
Cheap and badly animated =/= bad. LOGH, MSG, Rose of Versailles, SDF Macross, HNK, Ashita no Joe and many others are not that well animated, but they are absolutely great shows.
Will they ever remake it? I mean I love the original show, but such a heavily action focused show deserves another shot, with smoother animation. As long as the staff is passionate about it, it would be great.
>Pleb trying to talk
I feel like Berserk '97 should be name dropped on that list too. Great art and sound direction on that one.
If they remake it, I hope they tighten up the pace a bit. two 26 episode seasons should be enough. The best remake I have seen so far is Yamato 2199. It was a updated retelling of the classic, but there was so much heart in it, from fairly nostalgic character designs, old shows music and sound effects and so on. They kept alot of the old stuff, and updated it where it needed to be updated. I hope HnK gets this treatment one day.
>two 26 episode seasons should be enough
Can it all fit into that space?
Sure:
Season 1:
>Shin arc: 7 eps
>Rei arc: 5 eps
>Jagi arc: 3 eps
>Amiba arc: 2 eps
>Cassandra arc: 4 eps
>Ken-Oh arc: 5 eps
Season 2:
>Yuda arc: 3 eps
>Souther arc: 9 eps
>Raoh vs Toki arc: 2 eps
>Ryuga arc: 2 eps
>The final chapter: 10 eps
Glad you liked it, OP.
It is one of the best. It's old but who cares.
Check out the manga, it's even better than the anime.
The only thing I don't like about it is that the villains redeem themselves before dying by giving an explanation for what they did. It'd be better if they just died and left their motives to our imagination. Kimetsu no Yaiba is the same, every time someone is about to get killed by the protagonist, they accept their fate and regret what they did.
Great anime nonetheless.
Season 3:
China?
Second half is shit
SUCH A LONESOME NIGHTTTTTT
>Check out the manga, it's even better than the anime.
I actually read the manga quite some time ago. And while I enjoyed it alot, I just feel that the voice acting and ost give it much more power.
>The only thing I don't like about it is that the villains redeem themselves before dying by giving an explanation for what they did
I found that to be the great part. Everyone has a reason (except Jagi, he is an asshole). And that went only for the martial artists. The average villains like Jackal, Colonel, Uighur, boss fang and etc. didn't get any sympathy from Kenshiro. I think it's a thing between martial artists, as they understand eachother much better than the regular people understand them, thus they will forgive/accept some enemies before they die. And it's not like it redeems them.
>Shin did alot of horrible shit because he was blinded by love.
>Souther was a dick but that's only because he shut himself off from love. Kenshiro didn't really forgive him, as much as acknowledged him.
>Ryuga killed Toki to activate Kenshiro's sadness power.
>Raoh was based and thus was forgiven.
>Amiba and Jagi got no acknowledgement or compassion.
>Rei forgave Yuda because well both of them were dying and Yuda admitted that he always admired Rei.
Most of them don't even regret what they did. They just straight up say that they have no regrets and that they are fine with dying.
Yes, HNK 2 is bullshit.
SOUSA AI SURU HITO NIWA TOKI WA NAGARE
OP and others. What was your favorite moment, arc and character?
DRY YOUR TEARS
My favorite moment was when it showed how Shin survived. It's so weird seeing a shonen character getting a redemption arc 70 episodes after he is dead. Favorite arc was Souther arc. This shit was straight up biblical. When Shu carried that stone up and it moved everyone from the people to the soldiers. That was some powerful stuff. And god giving him his sight back just to see Kenshiro one last time was really nice. Favorite character was Juza (though Rei is also up there). Juza had a sad backstory, he was a lovable rouge with awesome personality and fighting style. Him keeping on fighting after his death was a powerful moment and the way his blood reflected the sky after he bleed out, was the most kino moment of the show.
DO SURVIVE
Who owns the rights to the English license of the manga. Any chances of Dark Horse picking it up and re-releasing it as a hardcover edition like with Berserk and Hellsing?
Juza's arc was a masterpiece. Dude picks a fight with the toughest bastard in the show, calls him a dick, breaks his favorite hat, steals his horse, and rides away.
I agree to some extent but I prefer seeing bits of the villain's story from the beginning, or hearing it from other characters like they do in Cowboy Bebop.
It's still one of my favorite anime anyway.
You're right about the soundtrack and seiyuu, but the art in the manga is far superior.
Fuck off rug you microdick subhuman
Not to mention that he straight up ignores Raoh using Hokuto tehnique that 100% makes everyone talk against their will. He just gives him the finger.
Are you literally me?
Also Souther was such a cunt, he has no right to be here
>that 100% makes everyone talk against their will
That's not how it works, it just makes you experience excruciating pain if you don't talk, which is why 99,99% of victims talk.
He was however a worthy opponent for Kenshiro. He gave him his toughest fight next to Raoh. He and Kenshiro also had a really important moral battle going on, as Kenshiro fights for love, while Souther fights to prove that love is a weakness. Kenshiro won that fight and saw proof that even a bastard like Souther has love in his heart. That later became the case for Raoh too, as Raoh also had simply buried his love. Doesn't excuse his actions at all, but he is still a tough opponent who died while proving Kenshiros point. Shin killed and enslaved alot, while depending on the version, Ryuga slaughtered old and sick people before getting to Toki, and both are forgiven.
Am I the only one who wonders what sex with a hokuto user would be like? Like if there are 700 pressure points, there must be a couple that do some kinky shit. Like an instant orgasm button. Or you pushing your own power point to get a 6 hour erection. Yuria must be one lucky woman.
>moeshit
Discarded and expunged.
Their finger strength, speed and power of their fingers would be enough.
Rei's death broke me.
Yeah, that was such a cruel and unforgiving moment.
It's definitely one of my top 3
Who is the better fighter? Kaioh or Raoh?
Obligatory:
youtube.com
I know nothing about HNK 2, but aside from Kenshiro, I think pic related would be their power tiers.
I think Shuren and Huey are underrated. I mean we can't really get a read on their strength, if their only big battle was against literally the strongest bloke at the time.
toki was the better fighter
Without his radiation poisoning, he is the strongest hokuto brother. But with it, he is just an inch below Raoh and equal to Kenshiro before he unlocked that ultimate technique.
I have to give a shoutout to Kenshiro vs Raoh. So many times have I seen excellent buildup for two characters to fight, only for their fight to either be lackluster, a copout or some other sort of bullshit. But not here, here it's a 50 episode buildup from their first fight to their last fight, and it was so worth it.
the question is, without his poisoning, how superior would toki be to the other two?
Toki in his prime could take his two older brothers AND Ken with Jagi as a tripped out back up with little effort.
If we ignore Musou tensei and just focus on them in their regular form, then Toki has the upper hand in many ways. His speed, precision, knowledge and graceful movement made him the strongest hokuto brother.
is he 100% unable to master musou tensei?
Not at all, he had the same potential as Kenshiro and Raoh, it's just he got fucked the second he got terminally irradiated.
I actually remember someone I used to be close friends with on twitter and I loved HnK. He left and I haven’t talked to him in about a year. Still hurts a bit. Bob, if you’re still out there, I’ll always remember you and I’d like to talk again.
Sure but it'll be the shitty CGI though.
DAKARA KYO YORI ASU YORI AI GA HOSHI
Reminder that Raoh lost against Fudo
Because he had PTSD and wasn't fighting seriously
Toki was the fated successor, both Ken and Raoh acknowledged it and it was making Raoh particularly butthurt despite his own massive ego, since he saw that Toki fell not because of his faults or lack of training or willpower, but because of a disease he ultimately had absolutely no control over. For a successor of Hokuto Shinken to die like that is an unimaginable trial.
Excuses
