Nise actually had the best art and editing actually. Bake didn't look good aside from the few cherry-picked scenes everyone singles out. The 'quality' went downhill after Nise though.
Plot-wise, Bake's one of the weakest parts in the series. Only Nise's worse than it in that regard.

Incest made me drop the Monogatari series. So Bake is the only thing for me.

There was a purpose for this though, by then Karen has come to different terms with Rrrg, she now sees him as someone she now rely on and trust. But Rrrg still didn't take Karen seriously, she saw her as a mischivious little sister who kept getting into trouble. His entire perception of her changed thanks to the toothbrush scene. At first, he thought he was proving himself right (pic related), that Karen wouldn't be able to handle herself at Kanbaru's (or in general) and didn't know what she gets herself into.

Karen showing that side *aroused* of her led Rrrg to see her as a woman, not just his annoying little sister, shifting the relationship in a way that allows for future development.

Is it an unconventional way to do it? Yes. Is it fan service for the sake of fan service? Perhaps. But I like how it's not JUST fan service. It sets up these characters for future developments. For better or for worse.

To add to this. The toothbrush scene really contrast with the Shinobu/Araragi bath scene in an interesting way. One is VERY sexually charges yet is fully clothed and involves no direct sexual stimulation. The other is to character completely in the nude for an extended period of time yet has no sexual tension. Despite this, at face value, the bath scene is more ecchi than the toothbrush scene.

Scene length is completely irrelevant and comic relief has nothing to do with it, they're not mutually inclusive.

I found the first season of this show wierd to watch.
Everything comes off perfectly as a psychological show. All the characters problems are on the noise mental disorders, so you start to think all the supernatal stuff that happens it's all just a reprisentation, a way of showing tgier mental state but not accualy happening.
Then 3 episodes in, sorry no its all just supernatural. Then keeps baiting the psychological for the rest of the show making it hard to watch.

If anything you could say the characters are well made with believable flaws, but I feel oldly let down with it been just another "it was a spooky ghost" a ime, anyone els feel the same?
