This is just fucking bad. I really would rather just see Naruto and the others after Sasuke come back or fully grown up just hanging out and behaving like actual people rather than how shittily the Akatsuki became the end of the entire story rather than just a dangerous group hunting Bijuu. The protagonist never having to deal with and grow because of real war and being forced to fight enemy villages before THEN being determined to end these kinds of conflict is then biggest letdown.

Well duh, episodes like those are the most important as they give the characters more volume then just 'hurr I punch stuff ebcause of whatever conviction'.
Same in One Piece when Sanji learn from that filler cook in Water Seven or the entire G8 arc. Because they don't have to follow the plot, aka rush from one big bad to the next to keep 13 year olds hoocked, sol and filler can be used to actually reinforce a characters personality. Or simply making them more human.

Shortly after that the Chunin Exams begin, and then there's a month gap before the finals. Orochimaru attacks, Hokage dies, Sasuke leaves like a week later.

I mean I get that they "bonded" through their brushes with death together but it is really not enough to justify Naruto chasing after him for the rest of his life like it's the only thing that matters

There's a more selfish motivation going on too, when they finally fight at the very end and Naruto admits that he always wanted to bring Sasuke back because "seeing you in pain made me hurt too"

Their relationship wasn't one sided, it was Sasuke being edgy and denying his affection to Naruto due to jealousy and his thing with Itachi. Sasuke knows throughout the story that Naruto is his only true friend.
