I honestly wonder how much of Naruto was planned out by him and how much was the idea of others. I've been re-watching it recently and I keep finding little details that remain consistent and actually matter later on. What gets me is there are little details that blow up huge later on in the series that show up in very brief moments in part 1, like Gaara's father, Asuma's Guardian Shinobi flag, or Kakashi name-dropping Obito. Hell they even show Minato with Rin, Obito and Kakashi as a full squad when the third has a flashback while fighting Orochimaru. But when the series came out chapter by chapter and the anime was ladden with obnoxious filler that went on for months at times, it was easy to totally forget stuff like "oh, Obito? I heard this name before!"

1) Power scaling: more efficient and consistent power scaling.
2) Write Naruto (character) better: No dumb biju mode stuff (sage mode should have been Naruto's ultimate/final power up). Give Naruto more tools to make his fights more interesting and less repetitive rather than super saiyan mode. Some examples: Some wind style jutsu and the usage of chakra blades to give him a cool weapon like sasuke but it will also pay homage to Asuma and be badass while simultaneously giving Naruto a way to hurt opponents without killing them completely, making writing fights a bit more versatile.
3) expand upon existing characters more: make it so Sai never existed. Instead bring along a character like Kiba, Shino, or Neji. Perfect opportunity missed for that arc and Sai was a character that brought nothing, he just took from other characters. Story should have included more of the teams in general.
3) re do the war arc: Either completely do a different arc or write it to be better with other elements I mentioned.

Extra: (warning: controversial and not to be taken as seriously as the previous entries)
4) completely handle end of shippuden/ "Boruto" differently by making it so sasuke and sakura don't get together. Instead, I think Sasuke should have remained single or have a child with Karin. Sakura should Either stay single or get with either Lee or Naruto. Naruto should either get with Hinata or Sakura. Hinata should either get with Naruto or stay single by determining she has "outgrown" or "overcome" her need for Naruto or something along those lines. I just think the way it was done was forced and dumb. Don't even get me started on the next gen characters.

Naruto's had so many trainers though. They first make it seem like Iruka is his #1 mentor, then it's Kakashi who ditches him to train Sasuke in private, then Jirayi shows up and gives him Rasengan, but Killer Bee is probably the best because he trained him to unlock Kyuubi Chakra mode which pushed him to basically be Ninja Jesus.

You forgot the most obvious one
1.) Madara is the final boss, either as the guy controlling the Pain bodies or the form we got. No Kaguya bullshit. Sasuke and Naruto fight over who becomes Hokage either in their death match or in a formal, sanctioned battle with spectators.

Alternatively, Sasuke fights Naruto after being manipulated by Tobi/fake Madara.

I kinda agree with your post. I would say, instead of Sai they should have taken Hinata. It's an amazing opportunity to develop Naruto and Hinata's relationship and Kishimoto just let it slip by.

I'll see if I can find it, but the story I was told was that Kishi pitched Naruto without Sasuke, and Jump told him if Naruto didn't have a "rival" they wouldn't publish him, although it's bullshit because Naruto has many rivals including Neji, Gaara, Obito etc.

I didn't mind the fact that romantic tension was not made a focus and wasn't forced on us constantly. Though it is kind of odd he never is shown having a proper interaction with her after she nearly dies fighting to save him and he goes on a rampage after the fact, in part 1 especially, there are several moments involving the two of them and overall, they seemed to just grow closer over time. I think we realize that her affection for him is different because she actually admires him, and isn't just blindly attracted to him because of his looks and talent, like most women are with Sasuke. If anything is bullshit, I'd argue it's Sasuke being with Sakura, after he nearly fucking kills her, and acts completely indifferent to her otherwise, not to mention her literally saying she only really seemed to fall for him because of his looks.

1. Actually have Sakura be a genjutsu specialist
2. After the initial Zabuza arc, have a couple arcs where Naruto's team has to work with other teams like Asuma's team, Gai's team and Kurenai's team. This way you can introduce the other side characters and have Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura build relationships with them (especially Naruto and Hinata, as well as Sakura and Lee) as well as raising Naruto's respect in the village by proving he's competent to the other Jonin team leaders in the village.
3. The Chunin exams to the Tsunade arc can basically stay the same as they are in canon
4. Have Sasuke leave the village specifically because he learns that Danzo and Itachi orchestrated the Uchiha massacre and the 3rd Hokage turned a blind eye to it. The rest of the Sasuke retrieval arc can basically stay the same
5. Have Naruto learn the basics of sage mode during the time skip
6. The Kazekage rescue arc can mostly stay the same, but have Lee, Tenten Neji and Gai beat their clones by having each fighting a different clone (Lee vs the Neji clone, Gai vs the Lee clone, Neji vs the Tenten clone and Tenten vs the Gai clone). Also delete the Mangekyo Sharingan from existence, the basic sharingan is already powerful enough

7. Remove Sai and Yamato from the Orochimaru bridge arc, just have Naruto, Kakashi and Sakura going after Orochimaru and Sasuke. Also have Naruto almost convince Sasuke to come back to the village but have Sasuke decide to stay with Orochimaru at the last second.
8. The Shikamaru arc and the Pain arc can basically stay the same as they are, but it's crucial to have Naruto actually respond to Hinata's confession and take her on dates for a few chapters at least.
9. Delete the Kage summit arc from existence and replace it with an arc where Sasuke hunts down Danzo and kills him, then have Sasuke return to the village and get imprisoned.
10. Rewrite the war arc so it's all the smaller Ninja nations (which Madara and Obito secretly have control of) vs the five great nations, no zetsu clones or edo tensei bullshit also have Sasuke break out of the village at this point and join Naruto, Sakura and Kakashi at the front lines, also have Hiashi Hyuuga die to save Neji instead of Neji dieing to save Naruto
11. Naruto's power should be capped at sage mode, him having the tailed beast mode makes him too strong. He should befriend Kurama and use him as a summon instead
12. Have Gai kill Madara with Night Gai then die himself while Obito puts everyone else (except for Naruto, Kakashi, Sasuke and Sakura) into a Tsukuyomi then have Obito get beat by Naruto, Sasuke, Kakashi and Sakura working together, no coolest guy or Kaguya bullshit.
13. At this point have Sasuke reveal his plan to kill the 5 kage and destroy the village system, using the brutality of the Chunin exams and the murder of his clan as justification for doing so. Have Naruto and Sasuke fight it out with Sasuke winning but Naruto convincing him to become Hokage and reform the village himself instead of murdering the Kage
14. End the Series by pairing Naruto with Hinata, Sakura with Lee, Sasuke with a better version of Karin and Kakashi with Shizune. Final page should be Sasuke's face on Hokage rock

Rinnegan was fine, should've been limited only to Nagato as a once in a generation thing/something incredibly rare. I was totally fine with the six paths as a gaze into what the OG Sage was capable of, but then it just became an accessory which it seems like nobody even used properly, i.e. all those resurrected jinjuruiki having it but never doing anything with it.

I agree, I don't think they should invest heavily in the romance stuff, but if they're going to have characters even get together in the 1st place it needs to make sense. I completely agree with your statement on sasuke like what I said at the end of

Naruto and Hinata made sense IMO, it just wasn't developed enough on screen. Sai and Ino also made sense because she's the shallow type to go for men over their looks and little else. But I wish Sakura would've developed past wanting Sasuke after he nearly kills her, and instead either remained alone or possibly with Lee. The rest of the pairings we saw sans Shikamaru and Temari - and obvious power couple - felt like they didn't need to exist at all, like fucking Choji and that girl from the Hidden Cloud, seriously?? TenTen and Lee after TenTen did nothing but belittle Lee and prop up Neji, seriously??

Some of this is good and interesting but I don't think it "fixes" everything. Some of it's just freaking weird like your clone proposal and the war arc is excruciatingly difficult to edit right, making it shorter and less convoluted is the way to go.
I don't think Sasuke becoming Hokage over Naruto would float well with the majority of people.

You had me up until Sauce becoming Hokage. Sure, your version has him being less of an absolute fucking lunatic and committing less crimes, which is nice, but ultimately he's still a traitor to the village. He doesn't get to wear the big hat after that.

Gonna be honest, that would just be dumb. It might sound fun and different and unexpected but it really would piss people off because they're hyped to expect something else, and the creators really go out of their way to foreshadow that as the conclusion as time goes on.

Oh, and Naruto losing to Sasuke would totally blow the entire payoff that get set up since basically episode two. The kid who's a loser and sucked at everything building himself up to be the best of the best was a theme drilled into the series, and before you come at me with the Child of Prophecy stuff, I'd remind you that part 1 Naruto nearly died enough times that his willingness to change and improve his own personal skills made the difference in the end.

Thats the whole issue with it. What I propose is either have her "outgrow" Naruto like I mentioned by finding her power in herself rather than Naruto, OR do what another user suggested and actually develop her relationship with Naruto to a degree by using her instead of Sai in the bridge arc. I'm not saying make it a "Naruto x Hinata" ship arc but just have her be useful and have wholesome interactions with Naruto. Hell, I wouldn't mind them doing it with ino, I always liked their chemistry.
