Italy. The white highlight bleeds into the white background once it's out of the character's frame. The title isn't leaving much unused space besides it.

No, it does have a purpose: it makes the title sliglthly more clear and readable to the eye. It's a tadbit too much though, maybe.
The english version had the same idea, too bad it kind of looks like WordArt.

The background of the covers are pure white so the title having a white silhouette effect is kind of disorienting.

That's why the effect is also white, to blend with it. I don't like it very much either, I'm just saying that it makes sense.
On the background areas the text is red on white, wich is one of the most eye-catching combinations. Over Yonagi it's still red on white for the same reasons, and the effect doesn't clash with the background like it would if it were any other color, fading and blending naturally with it. Can you imagine if it was yellow or any other color? It would be even more weird, either because the title wouldn't be as readable (wich is the whole point of this choice) or it would straight-up look worse by clashing with either the background or the title.
