Most of the females in fma suck, though. Most people can't write good female characters in general. Probably because females are usually written as designated love-interests for the male characters first and foremost, and so usually have roles that revolve entirely about them.

Rose, Hawkeye, and Olivier Armstrong were all interesting and compelling characters.

Too bad the love interest was a "naggy wife" stereotype though. The sexual objectification stuff about miniskirts with Mustang was also really uncool.

Beastars reminded me a lot of my own experiences when I was in the characters' age group. There is a lot of psychological realism in that story.

Women grow up reading/watching stories with male leads, so they can identify and empathize with male characters. This allows them to write convincing male characters in their own works who can be loved by both male and female fans.

Men grow up learning that empathizing/looking up to female characters is weak or 'gay', so they avoid works with a female MC. They view women as sexual objects due to their male sex drive but don't empathize with the opposite sex to the same degree that women do, so their female characters are often one-dimensional or stereotypical. There are always exceptions, of course.

Which mainstream shonen authors do? characters having sex appeal doesn't mean they're sexual objects. Naruto has the most useless female characters in any shonen and none of them have any sex appeal other than tsunade, who is arguably the most fleshed and useful female character in that show.
